Have Console games "lost the point"?

I'm going to have to disagree with you on the fact that PCs are meant for gaming.
That is simply not true.
There are more PC's out there meant for the daily business of it's users.
The fact that people on here have to say their PC is a gaming PC to differentiate themselves from non gaming PC's is enough to prove that.

Making a guesstimation here, I would say probably about 30% of all computers owned have gaming anything in mind.
Can all PC's play games?
Well yeah, sure.
However depending on the age, and components that make up the computer, it can perform those tasks with varying degrees of quality and success. Some probably won't be able to do it at all.

On the other hand, 100% of consoles can not only play games, but do them well. If you have a 360 playing AC you can guarantee that other 360s will play AC at the same quality as all the other ones. Nothing different about it.

Lately now of course console gaming on gaming consoles are starting to become a bit second hand to social media.
Xbone suffered the consequences.
Sony was going to do it with the PS4, but seeing the reaction at M$ before E3 ducked out of it. (We all remember that they patented the very idea Microsoft implemented into the Xbone. Don't tell me they had no plans on using it if the backlash wasn't so bad.)

And Nintendo was always on the forefront of games first everything else later however they focused on the wrong audience for the Wii, and are now fixing that with the WiiU.

While console fans don't like to hear this at all, PC's beat consoles in almost every aspect these days. Sure going from starting up the device to playing in game the average PC takes longer than the average console. And it takes a bit of research to get a decent PC together opposed to switching your brain off entirely and just buying a premade console. But apart from those two things, which are only a bother to "I deserve everything this instant!" and "But I'm too lazy to learn something new now to get better results in the future" people, PC's are just the better choice.

More versatility. More power. Cheaper games. Controller available as well. Larger gaming library. (consoles are only just dipping into indie games atm) And better control options for certain games. (Try playing an FPS, mmorpg or RTS with a controller vs someone using a keyboard + mouse)

To me personally, consoles would have become completely obsolete with the PS3/XB360 when they first came out, if it wasn't for the exclusives on them.

See, your general point is correct.

But why did you have to go and put those slants on it that you did in the bolded parts? How on earth is "i'd rather just spend money that i earned on convenience" equal to "i deserve everything this instant!?". They earned their damn money, they can choose what they want to spend it on. Don't accuse them of being lazy or self-entitled just because they don't choose to spend their money in the same way as you. Pull your head out of your own arse mate.

Consoles won't be going obsolete for a long time yet. Not until PC's can find a way to be so incredibly simple. But at that point they won't be the "traditional" PC's of old anymore, they'll just be a Steam Box type deal, because there'll still be people taking the complex option in fine-tuning their rig to get the most out of it. Having said that, the people who do choose to take the complex route and spend their money and time on getting the most powerful machine possible, yes, they'll have the more powerful machines.

You'll never see a cheap generic hatchback beat a custom formula 1 car on the racetrack, but then again, the average person doesn't want the hassle of having to learn to drive and maintain a formula 1 car, and more often than not won't be driving on a racetrack. They just want to drive into town and back. Which a hatchback does just as well.

Since the seventh Console gen a decent $700 PC can play anything that you throw at it.
Okay perhaps you had to update Direct X once in a while.

Both PC and Console have the update (delays) these days.
Though I haven't had to wait for a game to update in ages... All praise to steam.

It happened to me with EVERY pc game I bought this year. NOT one worked without tech support. And the one never ran even with tech support.

UNLESS you build a gaming pc specifically it happens all the time.

I've built a few of my own PC's and this sort of stuff still happens all the time. It's the trade-off for having a huge variety in hardware and software, the fact that one piece of random software might not work too well in combination with another. It's inherent to the way the PC industry (aside from Apple to an extent) functions.

As long as i don't have to deal with drivers and games constantly crashing with no reason and fix, i'm fine with consoles being almost like PC. MMOs are great on PC (thank a flying f*ck FFXIVARR working on my gremlin riddled PC prone to giving me DirectX TDRs) for everything else i will be using console, Sony and MS exclusives are nice too.

You are complaining about specifically playing new games on a PC, yet decided to not play on a PC that is well equipped to play games on... Sounds to me like you just have too old of a system for new games. You cant expect a PS3 game to run on a PS2, and it seems like that is what you are trying to do. Play new games on a system that is more equipped to play last generation quality games.

You don't HAVE to buy a gaming centric PC, but you do have to have one powerful enough to run them. If it happened with EVERY pc game you bought this year, then you need to upgrade a bit. Its not localized just to PCs. Old consoles cant play new games either.

Thats my point, unless you build a gamming pc, games won't work well. Even if everything on your system says it meets the requirements. Thats why consoles are better in my opinion. I own a ps3, any ps3 game will work. I own a pc, no one knows for sure what games will run on it. Not even the system test program gets it right. And most pc games I looked at didn't have a demo I could download to try first.

Until pcs come up with a system to tell you as clearly and easily as the consoles which games will run they are simply not worth the trouble to me.

X-wing, Wing Commander, Tie Fighter, Warcraft, Doom and other notables from the DOS era heavily disagree with your assessment. I started playing flight sims and rts when I was about 5, but my father liked them and we had lots of games on the computer.

The lock that consoles put on graphical evolution(due to 90% of everything being a port or multiplatform) has made gaming PC's very affordable, I haven't upgraded in years and can run everything that's coming out at high qualities, I'll need a new setup when the new consoles start to change the landscape but that's sometime off yet and I'll have the money from selling the current parts to fund at least half of the new hardware. It's a big investment at first but it becomes cheaper than consoles after that so yeah I don't see the point in having a console anymore unless you're technically inept in maintaining a healthy computer but even then you could just learn it's not really hard or even a hassle.

I don't judge a game or a system by the amount of time it takes to start up. Gaming is a time consuming hobby, if the minute or two it takes to start playing something is really that much of a bother, find something else to do.

Yes it does. You can choose in the settings, wether you want to boot to directly to the game or the XMB

I will never understand this notion. There was time when I played my ps3 and disabled the auto sign in to psn. No sign in = no game updates and no ps3 firmware updates. I just put my games and played them without so much as using any online features for 8 months at time. I can't do this with pc. Just about everything needs some kind of online authentication which will force me stop and cock around with client updates and game updates never mind the fact that updates occasionally mess shit up. I once had an Nvidia update disable/fuck up sending sound to my TV while connected and it took me hour to figure out why. And because I don't have a $1,000+ computer all my games require tweaking graphics settings to play. Besides, my ps3 boots in 5 seconds and my pc don't without a $500 SSD so that's streamlined too

Personally? I'm just bitching cause I find these things annoying. There is no "better" platform in my opinion, I just have too little free time to let my time be sucked up by these little hiccups I run into when playing modern pc games. And honestly, I see consoles as quick, locked down pc's and there's no point in neutering a perfectly good computer of extra features like Netflix when they're perfectly capable of using said features. If don't want to use extra features like updates and crap then do what I did and don't connect in the first place

For the record, I would like to build a super pc to play games on but when I get one later (cause I got no money) it'll be because I have an interest pc's, not gaming.
