Have this Massive Plot Device

I'm a creative writing student at university level, and every week I have to read at least 20 pieces of work, half of them novels, short stories etc.

Last week I read a 'fantasy' in the mold of Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy which included a scene where the protagonist was handed an iPod. It was supposed to come across as natural and draw no attention to itself, and the author said she didn't quite understand how I could possibly have managed to spot it, but it was incredibly obvious.

So when have you been watching, reading, playing a film/tv series/book/game and something which is clearly supposed to be a downplayed plot device is massively obvious (Can include fanfictions, original works not published etc.)

umm in games i find it incredibly easy to tell when an area will have a cutscene/ bossfight. i dont think its that impressive but my friends dont seem to be able to do it.

Edit to clarify: I used to watch Yu-Gi-Oh when I was younger (Sue me!) and this gave away to me that the show really didnt understand anything of the cardgame, even in later seasons.

I called the ending of The Sixth Sense waaay before the twist.

Also, I know when something bad's about to happen in pretty much any game. Getting lots of ammo/health kits/etc. out of nowhere is a pretty good sign.

The author Darren Shan is good, but somewhat same-y in his big twists and reveals, I'd read his entire Vampire series and by the end I was starting to be able to tell what was gonna happen. Then I moved on to The Demonata series; the more I read the less stuff surprised me and the last three books were a total snore-fest for me, only surprising me when something came from out of nowhere and had no build-up whatsoever.

Also, a friend of mine predicted the entire second half of an episode of Doctor Who and we spent the rest of the episode laughing our asses of as he was proved right on every little thing.

Many things, but games can be the worst. Anything that is detailed but is not at first glance part of the plot is probably going to have some relevance later.
