Have you ever loved a series/francise so much that you DIDN'T want to see it continue?

After seeing the recent thread on the new Dragon Ball Z movie I got to thinking and actually this has come up before I've just never asked about it. I'm guessing, considering how many people keep clamouring for more and more sequels, that most people are going to answer "no," but tell me have you ever loved something, either a game or movie or tv show franchise, so much that you actually didn't want to see it continue any further? It could be for any reason, either you feel it's reached it's peek and any further installments would only ruin it or whatever.
I think I've already made it clear from my introduction what MY answer is.

Does Mass Effect count? I love the series to bits, even 3, even its ending, but I'm scared Bioware is going to try to increase the stakes even further to seem an improvement over 3, and in my opinion that will ruin it.
James Bond? I really love some of the earlier films but Skyfall took all that was Bond and pummeled it with a meat grinder until all that remained was the name. I'd rather they do no more 007 films instead of making more in a similar vein to Skyfall.

Firefly to some extent.

The show was killed before it's time, that's for damn sure, but at the same time, what we got was absolutely brilliant.

It's like this pristine, untouched franchise, untainted by commercialism.

I'm scare that if the show continued, it might not be so great any more D:

Yeah maybe Bond. Maybe. I just don't like how they've screwed all the cool gadgets over and even made references that cool gadgets are not "2012" enough :(

Katawa Shoujo? I think a second one would just be automatically worse because there'd be no Hanako. I mean it's Hanako ladies and gentlemen. She's like the best thing to happen in gaming history.

Anyway, as far as I know the dev team for that game was a load of randomers that collaborated over the idea of a VN with disabled girls. How they managed to make it classy and incredibly well written is beyond me.

I'm pretty sure everyone who ever watched Supernatural wanted it to die at the end of the fifth season.

This was my thought when I read the thread title. To add to Daystar's comments, it's been just over 10 years since Firefly first aired and a lot has changed since then.

What could Whedon really do with the series given the chance to revive it? Even if you got all 9 actors back, they're all 10 years older so are you really going to sell it as an immediate continuation of Firely when Mal clearly isn't in his early 30s anymore? And what gets done with Serenity in all of this? Does it get retconned so that the whole crew can be available for more adventures?

I've tried to, but I've never been able to pull it off. I tried to for Code Geass, but I got excited for everything. Yes, even Nunnally in Wonderland [http://myanimelist.net/anime/12685/Code_Geass:_Nunnally_in_Wonderland]. Even though the first episode of Akito the Exiled kind of sucked, I'm still excited for the second. It's shameful.

I was sure I'd be able to pull it off for Puella Magi Madoka Magica...mostly because I didn't think they'd make any sequels. Welp [http://myanimelist.net/anime/11981/Mahou_Shoujo_Madoka%E2%98%85Magica_Movie_3:_Hangyaku_no_Monogatari]. Inevitable best thing ever.

EDIT: Oh, an actual and none-anime example: Heroes. Anybody else remember that show?

Mass Effect in a sense. Yes, the universe has a lot of potential to have a bunch of great stories besides Shepard's, but with each Mass Effect game being a bit weaker than the last, and the external media being 'eh' at best (save for Ascension), I feel that any continuation to be had isn't going to improve much of anything. Plus, thanks to the ending, you can't do anything past the end of ME3 without pissing off a lot of people who are mad that their ending wasn't the 'right' one.

Also, The Simpsons. If you asked me around season twelve or so, I would have said to keep it going, but seeing the sad dead beast it has become, it needs to die fast.

Eh, I didn't. I've really liked the seasons past then. However, I do think this should be the season, with permanently closing the Hell gates being the end of it. Though I've heard they've already got contracts or something for another season after the current one. Either way, still liking the show.

And for the topic my choice would be the Simpsons. Seriously, how many seasons is it now? Over 20 or something? Used to love watching it all the time whenever I got home. It became beating a dead horse after like season 6.

Bleach should have ended when the Aizen arc finished.
Yet Shonen Jump just couldn't pull the trigger.
It was juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust popular enough to squeeze out two more arcs, I guess.

Oh yes. Season 6 was ok but season 7 wasn't great (THEY KILLED BOBBY!!!!!! HOW DARE THEY?!?!?) It seems that the writers are stretching it all out as much as they can. I've not seen season 8 yet, it might be amazing, but it seems they are just killing time until the inevitable Dean/Michael vs Sam/Lucifer punch up.

To be fair, Serenity killed it for me. That film was, with the exception of Summer Glau's character's psychotic freak outs, pretty dull.

DBZ probably should have ended with Frieza but it was still good up until the end there. None of the movies except maybe the new one are considered canon so they are just good fun. 24 should have ended after season 4. When season 5 came up and they killed everyone off in the first 20 minutes, I was PISSED. But I think the worst thing was what they did in the final season when Jack finally went over the edge. I feel so bad for Jack Bauer man.

On a side note, Smallville had the worst ending to a series that I have ever seen.

Metroid. I really hope they don't make another one. The last installment -which shall not be named- was supposedly THE last but I know they're not going to let it die.

...could have at least let it die with dignity =/

No

why?

Because if a continuation is worse than the rest of the series, I just don't bother with it. A producer eventually running out of good ideas (and/or being pressured by ratings/sales figures into bad ones), does not change the quality of the preceding portions.

Well this is the obvious one.... Star Wars.

I was really quite young when episode 1 came out, but I remember having LOVED the original three films and being excited for the new ones... I didn't really realize it until I got Episode 1 on VHS (yes kiddies it was that long ago) But SW should have died at RotJ.

Yes I know that, but I'd still rather they stop while it's still more or less riding high rather than driving it into the dirt.

The Phantasy Star series, no not Online, or Universe, because that has nothing to do with Phantasy Star.
The original series ended and it was a connected series of 4 games (maybe more if you count the ones that you could play on game gear or via the online service they had in japan) but the game series were all interconnected and it was all brought together with Phantasy Star IV. Lots of things were answered, and the game had a lot to offer including a very set ending that I don't think could continue without ruining the story. Some say Online is connected but they're wrong because the series is over with IV.

I don't want Fallout to continue in Bethesda's hands.

And even with a competent studio...where is there to go from New Vegas? They've gone so far ahead from the initial complete devastation and lawlessness in FO1 by taking such huge leaps in time from game to game. There's proper societies and governments now. NV was just BARELY post-apocalyptic. If it continues now, I think it'll really just be a sci-fi series. And it could still be good, but the whole "wasteland" thing will be pretty much gone.

I think New Vegas, with its ending that basically has you deciding what direction civilization in the wasteland will take from here on out, is a fitting end to the series. 3 entries is a good amount for any franchise anyway.
