In the UK there's a lot of hate towards the monarchy, which just goes to show how misplaced peoples attention and intellect is. The monarchy brings a lot of money into the UK, far more than they use, so I see them as a god thing. Even better is the fact they have no real power, so it's the best of both worlds.

I wish Parliament was permanently dissolved though, and replaced by a benevolent constitutional democracy instead. A bunch of posh eton bumboys jeering at each other in a room, while being paid hundreds of thousands of pounds to do so? Burn the lot of them.

Actualy we(I assume your English) are a constitutional democracy (correct term is constitutional monarchy) The royal family does have quite a bit of power, seeing as they can veto any law and even deny someone office as PM (Though the last Royal to use this power ended up dead)

I am idealogical against royalty due to being marxist and whatnot; and rich people who's only reason for being rich is because of being born or God as many Royalists like to say doesen't bode well with me.


The Royals do actauly cost us quite a bit (I won't get into how much they cost and how much they bring in as I'm not an economist)

The irony is the correct Royal Family, thats right the true bloodline live in Austrailia. Thats due to some mixs ups and affairs during the past (hundreds of years in the past). Historians manged to trace the true royals.

The Queen is theoretical allowed to do this. But if she would to try then she would simply get laughed at. There is a lot of stuff you can't take seriously in British politics. The Prime Minister for example, doesn't constitutionally exist.

It's the same way that the Queen doesn't literally give 'a-ok' for laws to be passed. It's just a figure of speech in these modern times.

Same deal in Norway. It's all ceremonial. If he even tried to use his "power" his head would be on a spike in hours.

Y'know, I probably would too. Never really thought about it before. It seems that respect for the royals has become racially engrained within the British people.

But yeah, I like having royalty hanging about. It lends a badly needed touch of class to British leadership nowadays

Here in the States we most certainly have a king. It's unfortunately not an actual person though. The almighty dollar is King in our lands.

Since the royal family here in Sweden asked for more money from the government for the newlyweds because "the wedding cost more than expected" (a wedding ALSO funded by tax-payers money), I think royalty can go shove their crowns up their royal behinds.

I don't believe that all royalty is like this, but the nerve that they ask for more money when they already can wipe their bums with 100 dollar bills, while normal people have to work for money just so the government can take it and give it to people who just happened to be born in a special family, is just testing my patience.

I already don't enjoy the fact that we're paying them to sit on their asses (yes, I'm aware that the king is sort of helping out by representing Sweden across the world, but still). Why should they eat caviar and cake every day in a nice big castle while the rest has to live normal lives?

(Yes, yes, this rant probably has many flaws, and I'm probably not educated enough to have a true say on this, but this is the image that both media and the royal family gives people of how it works.)

As for political power, I'm all fine with the way we have it. Having several parties rule the country and new politicians being elected every year to rule the country seems fair to me.

Another thing I forgot to mention earlier is that the Danish royal family doesn't have religious freedom.

I'm a devout opposition to all religion, but that's actually a rather basic right that's taken away from them right there.

Considering they can abdicate at any time, I wouldn't worry too much about their rights. They've chosen their golden cage themselves, and continues to do so every day.

As for the Marxist thing, well, I'm with you on that, but in a capitalist country, people are born into positions by the very structure of the thing. As the Royal Family don't lord it over the common man, I have a different priority of "target", aka Parliament and the Lords.

If you want to change the politcial system/structure you might as well do away with the royals while your at it and I quite enjoy the MPs slagging each other off in Parliment its most amusing. The Lords don't have much power there more as retirement gorund for MPs and to act as adiversors abour policys nad laws (I think that they can only veto a law 3 times; though the house of commons is meant to adjust the law each time)

But seriously. My faith in the monarchy mostly comes down to the fact that I like our crown prince. He seems like a really nice guy.

Alas I am only an American and we have no royalty. But I think it might be interesting to have a powerless king. I'm sure it inspires a great deal of pride for a nation to have such a prestigious individual within it's boarders.

Although I am visiting London next semester and they have a Queen, I'm sure that will be interesting. Although I doubt it will be the same as having native born royalty.

I would, but royals aren't that high on the hit list. Put it this way, I don't hate them or disagree with them, but for the chance at a different governmental system, I'd pull the trigger myself

I think over here ,in the UK, the monarchy is mainly a tourist attraction.. I don't think I've actually done anything significant during my life time (except the wedding) so I can't say it feels like there is much point but it can't be argued that they do produce a lot of tourist interest.. Can't say I'm to excited about the royal wedding though.. Only when I receive my invite

I don't mind a ceremonial monarchy in the sense that they're only really there because of tradition and culture. That's fine, you can keep 'em. But I don't like the idea of a political dynasty running off a bloodline. I don't believe people should be born into a job. They should have to prove themselves. Sure it can be a rather efficent way of power changing hands (although not always, many a war has been started due to a dispute in who's next in line for the throne), but I really don't like the idea that some simplton gets to rule the country just because his daddy did. You want to rule a nation? Ya gotta work for it.

We have a royal family over here in Holland too.

One of 'm spawned a great deal of bastard children all across the globe who get paid by our taxes, and he also once tried to overthrow a small country somewhere in Asia. Thankfully he's dead now, though we still have the rest of those dickheads hanging around.

In Norway we have a royal family. A king, queen and a crown prince. naturally they have no real power whatsoever, because that would be silly. But then what's the point? The whole thing is really quite strange right? I've allways liked the fact that we have a royal family but ive also had a tough time explaining why. It all dawned on me during the ski world championship the other day. It was back in Norway at last after over a decade. No other sporting event (except the winter Olympics) comes even close to being such a big deal. Our king was at the center of it all. Every winner of an event is personally congratulated by the king and his family after it's conclusion on the royal part of the stands. It's ritual that all the athletes seems to love. Maybe it makes them feel like knights or something.

The king is like a living, breathing historical artifact. A living piece of our past. And I think that's pretty awesome. Besides, what would we do with our royal palace, without a king to but in it?

Cool. It's nice to see a person get so enthusiastic about their leader. In fact I myself think it's cool that the king himself congratulates the participants of the skiing competition.

I don't think anyone in western world dissagrees with you =P I can't name a single monarchy where the king/queen is still in charge...

Canadian here and I'm a little bitter about having a royal connection remaining here for two reasons.

A) They don't live here so we can't visit them very easily.

but more importantly:

B) We have to pay for it when they visit. And they can visit whenever for however long they want.

It cost [http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/story/2009/11/26/nl-royal-bill-1126.html] the Canadian taxpayer 2.5 million for the prince's visit in 2009. That's a lot of money that could have gone into education...

So as much as I like the royals, I don't appreciate paying for them. If they lived here in Canada, were a bigger part of our national identity; I wouldn't be nearly so negative about it.

I'm a good Canadian boy, and I love the Queen. She's so dignified and awesome, plus she's on my money!

She may be awesome but she is expensive you know.
