Having just played the Duke Nukem Demo- I can confidently cancel my pre-order.

Is that just the 360 version or something? Because, while still being way weaker than I expected him to be, it wasn't that bad. Straffed around them Pigcops with relative ease, though I did had to use cover every now and then which is still too much. The shaky screen when you're getting hit doesn't make it any better either.

I'm getting the feeling it's mostly the 360 port that's utter tripe. Certain complaints I hear you and Miracleofsound about aren't really present on the PC version. The shooting was okay, hit detection didn't seem all that bad and the graphics were pretty decent as well.

Mind you, that's a lot of "okay" and "decent". The Duke deserves more than that still. Oh and the 2 weapons limit is just utter bullshit. I mean good heavens, this is a Duke game, I demand an entire arsenal under my command. No, I doubt this game will see my money any time soon.

Huh, really? That's odd then. Were you playing on Hard? It was just that tripod machinegun and spaceship that really got my health down quick. The Pigcops? Not so much. Straffing helped a lot. At least that's back in this Duke game, as it should be.

Might of been the machinegun, I've tried to block it from my memory. I had a shit pistol that didn't seem to do anything, and a gun that felt like shit when I fire it, and the zoom was fucking awful. Didn't stay for too long.

Well, despite finding it rather underwhelming, I didn't find it that bad. Yeah the pistol was pretty poor, and I bet the shit gun you're talking about was the railgun which indeed didn't even nearly feel like the awesomely powerful gun it should be. But I did most of it with the machinegun as well, which did sound and feel like a 3-barreled machinegun should be feeling. Mowed those piggies down pretty fast as well, at least on Medium it did.

But I digress, one thing is clear; this isn't the game Duke Nukem deserves. Or at least the demo doesn't make it seem that way. Ah well, at least there's Deus Ex to look forward to. *groan* 2 More months! The preview version left me wanting so much more.

No, it was like a laser thing with a scope.

And the first fight against the Cycloid had me firing dual rockets, and I felt like I was flicking peas at it.

Don't be reluctant to call it bad, because it was fucking terrible. People are far too apologetic towards it by even calling it OK. Its not funny, its not a good shooter, its ugly, and it compromises on what the people who want to play it want to play it for! I'm not even one of them (at all) and it fucking irritates me.

The game dosent take itself so serious, and thats what i like about it. its not trying to be this pretencious (oh, look at me, im SOOOO good.!) kind of game. Its like the gameproducers said: we dont care what you gamers say about it. lets just have some fucking fun.)
Sometimes we gamers can be really demanding and negative. We behave like a bunch of spoiled brats sometimes.
When its Duke, people should know its not going to be serious. :D

It wasn't a laser, the gun with the scope was in fact the Railgun. That's how bleh it felt, as a fizzy laser instead of a big gun propelling slugs with over 10 times the speed of sound.

But yes, the Cycloid fight felt rather weak. If only because he was so damn easy to fight. I'm all for bosses with awesome amounts of health, but I'm against those monsters to be so lazy that it indeed bogs down to a pea-flicking fight.

As for it's badness, the only reason I didn't call it bad because I had a relatively okay time with it. I didn't see enough bad things to call it 'fucking terrible', I only saw enough bad things to call it painfully mediocre. Certain issues people like MiracleOfSound and you jotted down were not as bad as I thought they were, and a few weren't even there at all.

Sadly there were still too much of them, but I didn't find it, say, Rogue Warrior levels of awful. That's a game I'd call fucking terrible.

I hope all these haters did their research and found out that the demo is the over 8 months old PAX demo. Gearbox has already said the full game has tons of improvements that the demo doesnt have.

Also who the fudge actually bases a game off the demo. Demos are always trash with 50% of the features missing. After playing PC games for over 15 years I cant remember one demo that didn't make me almost not buy the game.
Then why would they release a demo that's 8 months old featuring stuff that they know is changed, a demo is supposed to get you hyped for the real thing, let you try it out and see if you'll like it, if what you are saying is true then the PR department at Gearbox is being run by a rock
that last bit had me in stitches. well played sir!

OT: if this is true, i'm hoping that a public demo will be running off of up to date gameplay. i will be playing the hell outta alice:madness returns first, and then will likely pick this up afterwards, if nothing else then out of curiosity.

I'm still keeping my pre-order on Balls of Steel edition even though I have to admit that the demo left me quite unimpressed.

Three cheers for disposable income!

If you haven't already why not put your money on another, less generic game? Like Alice - Madness Returns.

Or buy some older games that you may have missed out. Beyond Good and Evil sold like shit, go buy that if you haven't already and support an original game rather than a bland generic FPS cash in.

Or send me the money. Or burn it. Or invest it in something worthwhile like a butt load of hot dogs.
Oh I may have disposable income but I'm not stupid. I already had Beyond GaE since launch, Got order on Alice (Because the first game was the best thing that ever happened to me), also got a pre-order on Deus Ex special Collectors edition as well!

I just think that having such a spectacular failiure will be quite a fun thing. Especially since everyone was like "Ohh yeah. Duke, he will show us good old FPS times". And it will not. It will serve as a painfull reminder that no matter the IP, a gaming company can fuck up even the most basic things.

You should re-adjust your expectations and do some research. Gearbox have had the game for roughly 18 months, finally completing a game that 3D Realms had been developing for over a decade.

The level of histrionics has reached a level of ridiculous proportions in this thread.
i couldve worded it better, and the incompetence of 3Drealms far outweighs that of gearbox i suppose, so ill forgive your ill manners; i wasnt trying to be dramatic.
Hardcore_gamer said:
They took over the game so it became their responsibility.
this guy knows what i meant; gearbox took over the project, had a decent development cycle of their own, but from what i can tell from the demo, all they added to the game were bland, basic elements from other shooters; its a dime-a-dozen FPS with the duke nukem IP attached to it. either they had something to work with leftover from 3Drealms but still couldnt make good on any promise of nostalgic FPS-ing; or 3Drealms' DNF was a mess and gearbox started over, but promised one thing and delivered another anyway.

duke nukem is not a complicated game to make; a functionally standard array of FPS weapons blown out of proportion to cause excessive gore, some aliens, some strippers, some corridors, some gore, and most of the dialogue will be one liners from one voice actor. its just mindless violence through colorful settings and things with alot of blood; by modern standards, a pretty simple game to make. im no expert, but im lead to believe the limited color palette seen in many modern games is due to advanced graphics or lighting of some sort, and if you want a colorful game, you go for simpler, more stylized graphics; a style that lends itself well to duke's over the top and ridiculous world.....a style that gearbox has done before in borderlands. they say you can only have 2 weapons because of console limitations, even though half life 2 allowed you access to all weapons at all times simply by hitting the d-pad; this isnt an RPG with hundreds of weapons, there only needs to be maybe a dozen unique weapons; we could cycle through them easily enough if HL2's system is somehow too complicated to reproduce.

borderlands went through a crazy development cycle, started off realistic and apparently boring, but ended up stylized and fun. gearbox said they learned alot from developing borderlands; judging from the result, alot of things that would make them a natural choice for developing a duke nukem game... and alot of things they apparently forgot when they actually did develop it. gearbox had all the skills to make a good duke nukem game even if they completely started over, and they failed anyway. that, to me, is incompetence.

its simple, old-school gameplay that really only has to carry the game from one outrageous situation to the next, but instead of developing that they spent their time on poo-flinging and a doodle board, so that its nothing but boring gameplay interspersed with a few amusing context sensitive button presses. im sorry, but it really seems to me like gearbox missed the point, and it was not a difficult point to get; "shoot your way out of crazy situations"....not "hide behind rocks regenerating health, and occasionally press a button to instigate a crazy situation". its a massive gameplay and humour segregation, and feels more like playing a generic modern FPS and changing the TV back to watch southpark for a minute on occassion than duke nukem.

3Drealms and whoever else might've developed it deserves the blame for holding up the game for so long, but gearbox deserves the blame for the final product.

I called it, and people said I was trollin' when I did!

But anyway, to say the least, I had hopes to be proven wrong... but unfortunantly, I am not.

Were sorry Duke, but that was probably a waste of 13 years...

I had hopes.
Unfounded, and against all odds, but I had hopes this was going to be a trip down memory lane with a large health bar, could take craploads of hits, could carry craploads of weapons, and sprint at 60 miles an hour.
