So I've downloaded DOS box, downloaded Doom. I ran it and it plays fine. The problem? No sound.

A cursory internet search revealed a couple of things that haven't worked, so I figured the Escapist was the best ready source of knowledgeable retro gamers.

Edit: Problem solved.

Thanks, ms sunlight!

Did you run the setup first? I believe Doom (and a lot of other Dos games) require you to configure the sound before you play.

This is because DOSBox emulates MS-DOS, and back in the days of MS-DOS gaming you did have to configure sound before playing most games. The easiest option is to tell your game you have a Soundblaster 16 card; it was the most popular sound card of that time. DOSBox emulates it and all 90s games will support it too, I know Doom certainly will because I first played Doom on a 486 with a SB16 installed.

Check out the DOSBox wiki entry for Doom [http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/GAMES:Doom].

Downloaded doom, did you pirate it?

It isn't abandonware yet.

Just get Doom95 or buy it from steam.
Doom episode 1 was always free to download as shareware. The game's still free to try. This isn't piracy.

I assumed you meant the full thing rather than just Ep1.

Carry on citizen.
Would anyone even care any more? Doom engine source code has been open for Linux (and thus, in a matter of days, everything else) since 97 and under GNU GLP since 99. Unofficial Doom clones have been free for 15 years.

Unless, of course, if the OP tries to sell it.
