I'm a Tom Clancy fan. Always have been, even before "his" games started coming out. I've read all the novels, and so far the games coming out under his name have been consistently good, with the exception of a couple of Rainbow Six titles.

The only games I haven't played are the HAWX games. Which is ironic, since I'm also a sucker for aerial warfare.

So I'm asking the gamers here, how good are they?

I was under the impression that Tom Clancy hasn't had anything to do with these games for years. He sold his name to EA. The only ever Hawx game I played was the original - and it was the demo. From my brief experience I concluded it to be an average flight sim that doesn't really work on a console. See if you can pick up a cheap copy of the original and see what you make of it; after all, it's your opinion that matters.

I liked HAWX (but like you im a sucker for flight sims) but I also found it a too short and too easy. The best TC game Ive played was Vegas 2 that game rocked, might even be the best non-sandbox 3rd person shooter Ive played

Did we play different games? Vegas 2 is a first person shooter with cover when I play it. It is vastly inferior to the "proper" Rainbow Six games and the original Ghost Recon.

I played Rainbow Six on the N64 and that game was brutal compared to Vegas 2. I found it more realistic as well. It wasn't at all glorified like it is now.

Haven't played HAWX, only the demo a while back. I think i found it a bit too... arcade-y. I get my flight sim fix from Ace Combat 6. While i know that is very unrealistic, i know that it doesn't try to imply realism like a Tom Clancy game does. I also found the story of Ace Combat 6 emotionally touching somewhat, which is probably a far cry from the usual Tom Clancy plot line.

They have demos. Play them.

Anyway, I hated them, but I'm finicky when it comes to these types of games.

I echo this statement. The original R6 games were tactical puzzles more than anything else. Hell, you didn't even have to be part of the mission, you could just plan it, give the code words and watch it unfold.

These days, the R6 series took a serious turn to the arcadey, and I'm not sure it was for the best. I mean, they're still fun games, they're just not what R6 is meant to be.

I found H.A.W.X. to be decidedly, well, meh. That said, I usually play Lock On: Modern Air Combat or IL2 Sturmovik: 1946 for my air combat fix. Do NOT expect anything even resembling realism from the gameplay. That said, if fast-paced explosion-fests are your thing, you could do much worse I suppose.

HAWX was good but there are several times and I mean several where its really just you against an onslaught of MIGs. the friendly AI just dont help and the enemy Ai seem to have infinite flares, infinite SAMs, or is just that more maneuverable than you. I enjoyed the story I guess but really its just a play once then give it back kind of thing

They're alright, but mostly they're kinda less good Ace Combat fanfiction with Clancy's name slapped on.

To be honest, HAWX felt a lot like an extended planespotting exercise. It's fun but extremely repetitive (there are only so many ways to fire a missile at a distant speck) and dying always felt really... nitpicky, somehow. It's like the game was saying, "well that was a perfect dive/backflip/explosion, but you actually wandered a little too close to that building and that means that you're going to have to play the entire mission again, including the part where your commander reads out your orders excruciatingly slowly while you cruise along and wait for some enemies to turn up".

In Vegas 2, you could choose between first and third person views.

entire mission again? is this #1 or #2?
there were checkponits in #1 for sure...however I found it too easy but not in elite as targeting is diffucit and annoying in off-mode.

I've always stuck to the Ace Combat series for flying.

I watched my friend play HAWX and it seemed really simple and boring. It didn't look like he had to do anything other than shoot.

I like Ace Combat, to be sure, but like most japanese games, at certain points they just stray too far into La-La-Land.

I've only played #1. Alright, there were checkpoints, but the individual parts of a mission took so long that going back to the most recent checkpoint was always extremely demoralising.
