HBO Bringing Lots Of Sex And Violence To Consoles Everywhere

Sometime soon, wholesome family entertainment like True Blood and Game of Thrones will be streamable to consoles.

Video streaming services like Hulu and Netflix have been expanding from PCs to consoles for a while. One of the major hold-outs, though, has been HBO GO. The service is a subscription-only service that streams content to both computers and mobile devices, but it turns out that HBO is apparently planning to expand onto home consoles.

It turns out that the network discussed plans for expansion via a conference call. According to GameInformer, "Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes confirmed that the popular streaming service would expand its reach from web browsers and mobile devices to connected televisions and game consoles."

HBO hasn't been a fan of other streaming services, claiming that license holders are cheapening the content they own by giving it away for free. As a result, HBO Go requires an actual cable subscription in order to access its content (which includes all the movies currently airing on the channel, as well as all the original programming it's created like Game of Thrones and Rome).

At the moment, no definite schedule or details (like if there'll be an option for a streaming-only subscription) for the service's expansion have been revealed. That said, I'd be tempted to spend $16 a month if I could stream shows like True Blood, Carnivale and Carnivale to my consoles whenever I wanted.

I feel like that's all HBO ever is. Sex and Violence. That's really awesome when you are..16. A lot of their shows I feel aren't actually that good past that though. Maybe its just me.

Wait so if I have HBO I can get this? Maybe I'm not reading clearly enough. If I can watch Deadwood, The Sopranos, and Six Feet Under that would be awesome.

Much like you I would be infinitely more interested in this, if it was a stream only subscription. I have no cable service (outside of the 6 local channels that accidentally bleed through my broadband internet connection. Everything Else I watch consists of rentals or streams (BTW Youtube has a rental movie service now.. Who knew, rite?)

My only concern is if it were limited to HBO original programming, then prolly not interested. Granted I like Game of Thrones, ROme, Sopranos, Carnivale, etc and am sort of Amped up by American Gods, but realistically that would not be enough content to hold over for 15$ a month. If you add in whatever HBO:Core is running film wise at any given time, then yes it could be worth it.

When you say "everywhere," are you being genuine or are you only telling a depressing half-truth like "everywhere... in America"
...
Because Australians have feelings too!

Just looked on the official site: HBO Go is only available in the US.

Alas, all of HBO's programming is already on my cable provider's "On Demand" service for free. So since a cable subscription is required... Meh.

When I first read the title, I thought they were going to start making games, which could be interesting. We don't have enough tasteful sex in games, and more violence never hurts unless you believe Faux News.

Yeah, it's just you. A lot of the real world is, in fact, sex and violence. But they have had several very good shows and original movies without either of those things. In Treatment being one of my recent favorites. Bored to Death being another. Occasional sex but nothing graphic in it.

But whether the show has sex and violence or not, the acting is always top-notch, and it's the only place where you can find so many TV series based on good books.

Yes, if you have an HBO subscription now, you can get it now. Just not on consoles yet.

Already signed-up, but the content, at least what I'm looking for, is lacking. Maybe they'll add stuff I'm looking for later.

Nope, not worth it. I'd have to get a cable subscription, and then I'd have to get HBO on top of it. Basic cable where I live is 75 bucks a month. Screw that.

Pretty sure it's just you, considering they're just a channel that buys the right to air new movies and make some of the most awesome shows around.

I'll be honest, I don't watch any HBO shows at the moment. The only one I've seen recently I think is Dexter, and even that was a while ago now and I'm not sure that's HBO. Still, if people are raving so much for so many of their shows, it would be interesting to see them try bringing that to gaming.

Haha, I don't dispute that their shows are awesome. Game of Thrones was very well done, and convinced me to start reading A Song of Ice and Fire. But yeah, their thing seems to be mature, intelligent storytelling + gratuitous shoehorned-in sex to get ratings. A game by HBO would probably look a lot like Witcher 2, so I have no objections to that idea :)

In a nutshell, they complain about license holders showing their fare for free or much cheaper, so they respond by giving a service that costs two subscription fees and probably gives not that big a library to offer, while everything in their library can be found somewhere else cheaper or for free.
I have to ask, how in the hell is HBO still in business?

Since I would need a cable subscription, which I don't need, don't want, and just don't, I guess I am going to have to find different venues to watch movies.
Oh, hello Netflix and Amazon Instant...
