He Lived Long and Prospered: Leonard Nimoy Dead at 83

Actor Leonard Nimoy has passed away at age 83 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/leonard%20nimoy?os=leonard+nimoy>Leonard Nimoy has passed away today at the age of 83.

According to Nimoy's family, he died this morning Bel Air California as a result of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nimoy had been hospitalized on Monday following complications from this same condition which he personally blamed on a long-held smoking habit.

An actor for more than sixty years, Nimoy was best known by his many fans as the iconic Mr. Spock on the original <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/star%20trek?os=star+trek>Star Trek television series. It was a role he reprised several times for feature films, most recently in the J.J. Abrams movies Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness. He also had roles in shows like Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible and, more recently, Fringe, among others. Outside of roles on screen he performed as a voice actor in properties such as Transformers: The Movie, Star Trek: The Animated Series and a variety of video games including Civilization IV. He also directed several films, was a published poet, a photographer and, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130624-The-Hobbit-Cast-Performs-Leonard-Nimoys-Ballad-of-Bilbo-Baggins>on occasion, a singer.

Responding to his death former co-stars William Shatner and George Takei both expressed their grief. "I loved him like a brother," said Shatner <a href=https://twitter.com/WilliamShatner/status/571375716337643521>in Tweet. "We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love." Takei in his statement said that "We return you now to the star" and that affirmed that Nimoy had taught people to "Live Long and Prosper." It's a sentiment that I think many of us can share in.

This news was literally the first thing I saw when I woke up today. At the same time, a neighbor must have been chopping onions because my eyes started to water. RIP Leonard Nimoy. He lived long and prospered.

I will miss his work. I grew up on Star Trek and enjoyed pretty much everything he was involved in. Holloywood has lost one of its brightest stars today

I've never seen anything related to Star Trek, but I hear he was a great actor and all-around nice guy.

Rest in Peace, Nimoy.

I've already said this elsewhere, but rest in peace, Mr. Nimoy, your long journey has come to an end. You've already lived long and prospered.

I know that real celebrities allow employees and what not to use their "official" twitter account to make announcements, but I'm not fond of how his "The Real Nimoy" account is retweeting condolences. I have a similar issue with the Michael Jackson Facebook page.

Of course, RIP Nimoy, I do wish that I had indulged your content before, there's always the future to do it in =/

Never was a fan of Star Trek, but I'd be lieing if I didn't like some of the man's work out side Star Trek, and even though he was 83 and had by all accounts had a life most of us would kill for it's still a great lost. Not just to geek culture, ether.

(it was this or Taps)

Rest well Mr Nimoy you will be missed.

Goddammit, first robin williams and now Mr. Spock. I wasn't ready for this.
We're never ready. We never were ready, and we'll never BE ready. We just have to cope.

Goodbye, and good luck, wherever you are.

Damn, that's some sad news right there. I woke up to my group of friends texting about it and we all had a moment of silence for him. I do kindda feel like scum though... I read the article and while trying to be respectful the voice in my head instinctually read Shatner's quote, well, like Shatner. :/

I'm not exactly an old Star Trek fan. It was always something that might be on some times when I was watching TV with my dad and kind of was just amused by like the old Batman show because you know wacky old 60's stuff.(90's kid here) But I kind of really grew up liking and respecting the man. He was just always there and I always caught myself unable to take my eyes away from the screen when he would talk. He just had this way of talking that just said "wisdom".

Sad to see him go. Wonder how Shatner is doing..They were friends right?
