I thought it was so they could put the following ont he front of their packaging:

"It sounds just like the real thing"-Phil

Maybe phil just got really uppity online with the CEO of the company and now he is putting the kid through hell disguised as an opportunity to go "baller" status.

This is just bizarre. What I'm most interested in is this Phil character, what kind of guy agrees to visit a warzone?
Propably someone like me. I would take them up on that offer.
If you select a balanced adult person that can physicly and mentally stand the implications of traveling with a security detail and understands that hes not a heroic veteran who could take on heavily armed mercenaries - I don't see too much of a problem with that promotion.

Journalists and humanitarian aid personell risk their lives in these countries on a daily basis. Better yet - send someone there who is known on the internet and can put the experience into a series of Vods or a well written blog. Military and PMC personell have a limited view on the lives of those living in a warzone and most likely can't convey their experiences due to regulations.

Theres an opportunity there to be had - but it'll propably be missed like so many others.

I would love to be in that guys shoes. To visit a real war zone, to actually fight in one would be better. That way when people say "You don't know anything about real war." I could show them a ten hour video of my adventures in a real war zone.

Adventures in a war zone? There's nothing adventurous about being shot at, or witnessing the people around you having their internal organs ripped from their bodies.

I hate to be so cynical, but with age came the knowledge that their is a very real difference between video games and actual bullets.

Didn't they send Top Gear to Iraq a few years back, over-exagerting all the dangers that didn't actually eventuate?

I'd not call this a great idea, but all sorts of people do go to Iraq as it is.

You know... Im pretty sure the reason most gamers play those shooter games is cause they DONT have to go to war to actually do it.

now... I cant imagine that this wont all be staged and he'll be kept completely out of harms way (relatively at least) or else this shouldnt wouldnt fly, but still. And really, how exactly they expect this to sell product is beyond me. The only possible company I can think tha could do this is maybe Bose, and thats just if they put their headphones on soldiers and said it drowned out the sounds of war and used that as a proof of how good the prodcut is.

EDIT:

thats easy, just go enlist in your home country's military. Tell them you want to go fight on the front lines, they'll send you somewhere.

@Chain

I've actually been shot at and in the leg while working at a gas station one night. Luckily the robber was scared easily and a terrible shot. Coulda sworn a couple wizzed past my head.

@eme

I've already tried, didn't pass the physical.

I doubt he is going anywhere very dangerous, Top Gear (a UK telly programme) sent there presenters driving through iraq last year! Its not that big a deal! There a thread on this yesterday! Called 'Is this stupid?' or something? It had a poll I think!

Aaah, so some of you like killing pixel-people on your screen with a machine gun but visiting the real war is just a no-no.

I think it's good idea, maybe this Phil guy stops playing these wargames without remembering the poor sods giving their lives away over some political maneuver.

I think everyone who has spent too much time playing modern shooters should visit a real Warzone. I mean, I play Skyrim, I would mind visiting it (though it might be a bit cold but maybe I learn Fus Ro Dah)
I don't know what Headphones have to do with this issue but people have visited Fukushima & Tschernobyl after the catastrophy so why not a perfectly normal warzone.

There are so many things wrong with this you'd die of asphyxiation before you finished saying them.

I kind of don't know what to think.

Obviously the phrase "Worst. Idea. EVER." comes to mind, but I don't really know how to explain my reaction. It was somewhere between an amused chuckle and a "What the FUCK are they THINKING?!"

Hmm.

This is Phil. Phil used to be a gamer until he went to Iraq and got shot in the knee.

Sorry to quote myself from the other thread, but its easier that repeating myself, and it has points from a perspective that hasn't shown on this thread yet!

The official war in Iraq is nearly over, with pretty much all trops withdrawing by the end of this month. The insurgents arn't really bothered with the western world there anymore, they have other problems to deal with, so It is a lot safer. The whole things is a publicity stunt. I imagine they will take him to some quiet town, far from any of the areas which actually had problems, probably up in the North, where the Kurds are, who are a lot more friendly to Westerners, and have their own problems unrelated to the war anyway, then they will do a shoot, calling it a 'warzone' and then return home, happy days, and everyone thinks 'wow, look at the length they go to!'

The western media is inching its way back into Iraq. It was over a year ago when Top Gear from the UK sent their presenters driving across the middle east, through Iraq, Syria (before the uprising) Jordan and Israel as a pretend 'wise men' journey, parodying the nativity story for a christmas special. The whole time they were in Iraq they wore helmets, and played on the fact that they were in a dangerous warzone, although they were miles and miles north of any danger, and saw how beautiful the country actually is!

Most of Iraq now is no more dangerous than most middle eastern counties, or African countries at that! Or hell, even parts of New York and London are probably more dangerous now!
The in-fighting between Turks and Kurds isn't against Westerners and wouldn't be aimed at those visiting. Governments advise against taking holidays and non-essential visits. Whilst arguing that this is non-essential, it is also media. I expect the visit would be logged through Iraq itself, and advisors and guides will escort them. I also expect that the Iraqi government would welcome media, of all varieties, now that it is recovering from its wartime period!

It would make an interesting movie.
You know what, I actually quite agree with this. Of course things would need to head south quickly for the movie to be interesting. Let's just hope all goes smoothly for Phil.
