Heavenly Sword Animated Movie Releasing Digitally Spring 2014

The Heavenly Sword movie brings the epic of Nariko to movie-lovers next spring.

You've been thinking about Heavenly Sword recently, haven't you? Maybe it came to mind recently because, with the PS4 launch coming up, you've been thinking about going back to some of those early PS3 games you haven't played in years? (Or maybe it's because you saw this headline.) It's funny that you should be thinking about the game, because there's a Heavenly Sword movie coming out!

The Heavenly Sword animated movie will be available for digital download next spring, Sony revealed today on the PlayStation Blog [http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/10/30/heavenly-sword-animated-feature-film-coming-in-2014/]. The film, animated by Blockade pictures, is Sony's first attempt at making anything related to Heavenly Sword since the game was released on PS3 in 2007.

First announced earlier this year [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123512-Heavenly-Sword-CG-Movie-On-The-Way], the Heavenly Sword movie will be, for the most part, a retelling of the story from the original game. Fringe's Anna Torv stars as the voice of player-character Nariko and with Alfred Molina as the villainous King Bohan. The movie also stars Thomas Jane and, of course, Nolan North. If you haven't played the game, here's a quick overview, courtesy of Sony:

"Heavenly Sword is a dramatic tale of revenge that sees Nariko (Anna Torv), a fiery red-haired heroine, embark on a quest of vengeance against the invading King Bohan (Alfred Molina) and his army. Once considered the failure of a legendary prophecy, Nariko must wield a sword that was ultimately meant for another. This ancient Heavenly Sword, once belonging to a powerful deity, can never be wielded by a mortal without slowly and inevitably killing them. For Nariko, it's a race against time to avenge her clan before her life is irreparably overtaken by the omnipotent Heavenly Sword."

While the Heavenly Sword movie will be available everywhere digitally on day one, the movie will be shown on the big screen in "select global markets." According to Eurogamer [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-10-30-this-is-what-the-heavenly-sword-movie-looks-like], the movie won't be released on DVD until after the movie has left theaters.

Well that looked awkward. They are not exactly reaching for the stars with this one, are they?

Really? I haven't heard a peep about this game since it came out, and while I never heard anything bad about it, I don't recall it lighting the world on fire or anything. Who is asking for this?

I should finish this game at some point in my life. I liked it up until the arena boss, which reset the entire fight every time you died.

Personally I want this movie just to find out what twingtwan is and I'll be sorely disappointed if it isn't a slang for lesbian cunnilingus.

On a serious note I agree with you completely. Apart from the two fans this game probably has I can't see who would want this.

I'm not even saying I expect this to be bad (apart from expecting every video game film to be bad), it's just that I'm stunned that Ninja Theory think's there's a market for this.

Wow. I'll be the first to admit I WAS thinking about Heavenly Sword. I mean with PS4 on the horizon I was reflecting on PS3's starting line. This was a fun to point and was rather underrated by the public at large. Like many games it has the potential of a movie in it. A story about revenge? A huge freaking army? An evil despot? A movie filled with a someone kicking ass with a shape shifting sword? Definitely worth a gander. If done well might see a HD remake of the game on PSN or even a full remake?

Wait which portion are you talking about?

Like the first hour of the game?

Dear God, that was terrible! The game cutscenes looked better this.

And no Andy Serkis..? Was there any attempt to make this appealing to audiences?!

Pretty much. It took me 30 minutes just to get across the bridge. I might be terrible at this game. I must confes I only bought it because it was cheap and I was watching Fringe at the time [read - had a tiny crush on Anna Torv].

The visuals are terrible, its like they did it with the engine for the game (or worse), for a rendered animated movie one would expect for them to at least try to make it look better then interactive content that can be played in real time.

And it doesnt seem that Ninja Theory is all that involved (they are really good at animating characters) so the best part of it is already out the window (that and the lack of Andy Serkis)

I was interested in this until I saw that there was no Andy Serkis in it. Nice job, Ninja Theory, there's one sale out the window. (seriously, Andy Serkis MADE that game. He was the best part of the whole damn thing)

They replaced Gollum with Doctor Octopus. That makes me sad. Also, that's some serious uncanny valley shit going on right there.

Wait... so that was ACTUALLY a movie? I thought it was more like those "X game, the movie" where's just a collection of all the cutscenes or something like that.

Holy shit, there is an investor climbing a tall bridge fence somewhere right now because I swear this looks worse then the damn game.
And just so you are all clear on this, these visuals were their best part in the whole thing.
