I dont like the airport scene, mainly because it was just tossed in there to shock us and not to tell a story, basically making it a cheap and simple way of lazy writers to shock people as they obviously did not have the true talent needed to write a proper story that would do the same without all the forced shock.
I agree, and to expand upon this, I felt like this did little to contribute to the story. This part of the story could have been accomplished just as easily if the terrorists had bombed the airport. It also made no sense at all in the CONTEXT of the story. (Minor spoilers)If the CIA's goal was to capture Makarov, why the hell would the agent partake in the massacre? He was standing three feet away from Makarov and armed with an M60! WTF? (/Spoiler)
I can understand, and will even defend gut-wrenching and disturbing scenes in video games that are trying to develop a strong narrative. Jenny's last scene in the Darkness (you know which one I'm talking about if you played it) was profoundly effective, and completely changed how I viewed the events in that game.
But in this political climate, knowing full well that the world was going to be watching this launch, I think IW was extremely irresponsible in making this level. Germany is literally in the process of banning violent video games, and countries like Australia appear to be of like minds. Proponents of this legislation must have drooled when they inevitably learned of it from a clumsy conservative news story.
Yes, I believe video games are just as legitimate forms of art as other media, but the sad fact is that today's society doesn't agree, and risking legislation that could take this media away from any section of the population for low-grade shock value is stupid and not worth it.
Edit: Basically, this: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/press-released/6776-Poking-the-Hornet-s-Nest, plus poor political timing.
