So I got Heavy Rain yesterday and finished it (this morning/last night whatever) in one sitting. I kinda expected that since the whole concept of the game is it's replayability but then I found out that the choices you make only have slight reactions with the ending and the killer is and always be [spoiler/] Scott [/spoiler] no matter what decisions you make. So feeling a little bit lied to I figured I'd tell the escapies about this and see what they thought.

I think I heard something about a game where every protaganist could die. Didn't sound like a good concept or have good potential.

I hate stuff like that. inFamous was really bad for it too in that any choice you made had NO effect on the plot like:

You have to choose whether to save a bunch of Doctors or your girlfriend, if you try save your girlfriend it turns out she was with the Doctors and you're being punished for being selfish, if you try save the Doctors it turns out your girlfriend is on the other spot and you're being taught to act for the greater good. FALSE CHOICE.

That is a shame about Heavy Rain tho, since the whole point of the damn game is to make decisions that affect stuff. Seems really weird that it doesn't actually change the end. :S

Well...since i have little intention to buy the game, well, it seems to me that i was right then.
Oh well, i'll finish playing the Hell out of ME2 and Bioshock 2 first.

Ok this part is what really gets to me, I bought the game thinking it would unfold like one of those old school Goosebumps books where you it had 2 different paths and based on your decision you'd either make it out alive or die.
No this is completely opposite! The biggest let down is that most of the protagonists can't die if you want to make things more interesting. In fact they take it as far as if your in one of those fights or in some sort of life threatening quicktime event or something as a main character, you cant die even if you miss every single button! Ok now I realize that they have to revolve the story around a bunch of key characters but shouldn't there be like a limit to those that can die and those that cant? If you kill the father for example there could still be a chance of the detective finding the kid right? If your the private investigator and die cant the hooker go on a revenge quest? Its made to be played extremely linear because they went really cheap on alternate routes in the game. Its a pity.

I'm trying really hard not to click the spoiler tag... I think it looks pretty interesting. I may get it once the price drops, but until then I'll stick to my KotOR II

Would you guys think this game is a buy or a rent? I'm getting the game from Gamefly either tonight or tomorrow and I have the option to "Keep it" for 40 bucks. I've been hearing it's an amazing game and one of the best on the PS3, but then I also hear things like this thread, so I'm not sure...

any game that is 'experienced' rather than played is not really a game is it.
And just how is that?

When did we have rules for what qualifies as a game?

Whats wrong with an experience? Should we stop making things like Heavy Rain because it pushes the boarders a little bit?

That's a very closed minded way of thinking. And I'm sick of people getting on Heavy Rain's case just because its different. If you're a stereotypical as I've painted you in my head, you're next step would be to call me a fanboy.

No, I'm just someone who appreciates a good game, regardless of its methods.

Why not go back ot the first one. I found number 2 lacking somewhat..

also on topic. I really don't like it when games do that. I had the same problem with Dragon Age. Whatever I said and whoever I killed I always got the same dialogue and quests. The game was more or less the same every playthrough.

I haven't started trying to replay it but I'm a little disappointed if the choices are really that limited.

All well, since i played through the game in one night without realizing the time I can't complain. I enjoyed it.

Though playing on a very small old t.v. that sits on the other side of my room probably made the game tougher than it would have been otherwise.

EDIT: A quick question that I was confused about when I finished the game
What was the story behind Ethan's blackouts?

I can understand the blackouts because of the brain damage from the accident (if there really was any) but where did he keep getting the origami figures from?

You are my hero. I'm only halfway through the game so far, but I'm absolutely loving the experience. It may be different then what we normally think of as a game, but when did that become a bad thing?

Mainly because I only beat the first one the other day, and I've just started number 2 ;-)

If a game takes 1 day it damn better have replayablility.

Also on reagrds to the spoilers its the same in Ripper.
Who ever you pick IS the ripper, you just get diffrent dialoge, the only way to fail is to not pick anyone.

It doesn't come out until friday for us Brits, but I clicked on the spoiler tag anyway, cuz that game is not high on my wishlist. Regardless, yeah it's definitely a shame that whatever choices you make have no effect whatsoever on the plot, really defeats the object of having choices.
