Hellgate: Tokyo.

These words caught me off guard. I remember Alpha/Betaing for Hellgate London. There was a game with great potential, squandered. It was a bit like an MMO Borderlands, before Borderlands was a wet dream in Gearbox's boxers. In the alpha at least, the characters were funny and unique - one shop keeper kept calling me a big kinky toy, the deranged sorcerer offered prayers to gorilla grod, and the eternally downtrodden Techsmith #16 was impregnated with a demonic anti-christ baby then thrown into a burning pit (THIS BURNS SIGNIFIGANTLY MORE THEN YOU MIGHT IMAGINE). Then they kind of toned it down for Beta, bleh. But still, it was a good if flawed game.

Then the management totally fucked up the pricing and the systems and forgot to build a framework around the shooter gameplay. OOPS. HG:L crashed and burned, taking hopes and dreams and lots of peoples money with it. Forever banished from the western world, it only lived on in Korea (I think?) where it still exists to this day (I think?)

Until now(?)

This video doesn't really tell me anything. I can't understand japanese. There's no gameplay, no real footage. All I know is, By the Grace of Grod, Hellgate is back.

Hail Grodd

Edit: Looking at the end frame, it's probably coming out in 2010 3rd quarter. Given the developers name, Hanbit soft, it's possibly an expansion to the Korean Hellgate: London, which means none of us in the west will ever see it :|

Sounds interesting... I do find bad grammar to be a funny thing, and things dying is always cool.

I wanted Hellgate to be cool, but it sadly wasn't. Who knows if they'll fix it for Tokyo.

Wow.

Just wow.

I'm surprised that they're even continuing this - I forgot the korean company which purchased Flagship studios, but I know all of them went and started up Runic to make Torchlight and their MMO, so Hellgate: Tokyo probably doesn't have any of the original developers on staff. It's most likely, as you said, an expansion.

Then again, considering the failure that was Hellgate, no original dev team might not be a bad thing.

e_e I'm trying to think of a way I can both not buy the game and make it cost the developers something for not learning their lesson. Do they really think they can get gamers onboard with something like this when they supported Hellgate: London for all of two years before they ditched their servers? Seriously, my copy of the game is basically a worthless piece of plastic right now (on top of being a generally lousy game), and they want me to buy another one?

Weak.

Hellgate London was bad.... but maybe the Japanese can appreciate the grind better.

I remember an interview with someone from Flagship who said they were a bit too used to how things were run at Blizzard. The core gameplay elements were decent, but they tried to do too much with limited funds.

This is probably not an expansion but a new game running on the same engine and set in a different location.
