Hello America, one question. Why do you ruin all your best television shows?

Ruining quality television generates money in some Bizzaro World logic, giving whatever television executives who sell their soul and last modicum of decency piles of cash to fill their now empty and soulless lives. This, in turn, drives them to make television empty and soulless.

As long as it's comedy, I am happy.

I am just one of those guys who will laugh at anything :)

Although British comedy is superior always in my opinion.

Because we have good television shows to ruin.
I don't know wether that was some kind of passive-agressive dig at TV outside of America, so let me assure you. There are plenty of great shows outside of America, hell, a lot of the Canadian and American members here on the escapist can atest to the quality of British TV alone.
Considering American stations are snagging shows from Britain you don't even need to ask. At this point we are also ruining your show concepts. ;)

Really, it is all about money. Just money.

I have turned on my TV 2-3 times in the last month to find something to watch... Why is BBCA running American shows? How can BBCA make money on rerunning American shows? I mean seriously, I liked Star Trek TNG but it has been on a dozen stations since it ended. I have no idea why I have to see it again on BBCA. The Tudors I can kind of understand since it was on Showtime before. I WANT MORE BRITISH SHOWS, not reruns of American ones on my BBCA.

So, it has come to my attention that many American TV shows are run into the ground. Series such as Scrubs, Two and a Half Men, the Simpsons and CSI(just to name a few) were great shows, but after several series they've all gone down hill, and by down hill I mean fell off a cliff.

This isn't to say America is the only offender, but it's certainly the worst by far. So while truly great and original shows like Futurama and Firefly get cancelled (although I hear Futurama is coming back), Two and a Half men, which was great to begin with, has long stopped being funny, yet it continues to run, and the less said about Scrubs, the better.

Now I understand that popular shows make a lot of money and it's for that reason that they keep going for as long as they do, but don't the writers want their shows to be remembered for being great? Not 'that one show that started great and then was pretty shit for several years'.

Here in Britian, shows like Fawlty Towers and Blackadder, while very popular, only ran for 2 and 4 series respectively. You can gurantee that if any of those two shows were to suddenly return with a new season, their ratings would soar. But they won't return any time soon, for one reason. The writers don't want to write a new series for the sake of writing a new series, they want their work to be just as funny as it's always been, not churning out some forced plot just for the sake of it.

It's certainly the safe option, milking a series for all it's worth (let's not forget how guilty the video game industry is that), but it saddens me to see so many good shows(say what you want about America, but they have some damn good TV shows) die, when they could have finished with a bang and always be remembered as a great series.

So, fellow escapist, what are your thoughts on the matter?
Watch Series 7 and 8 of "Red Dwarf" and then tell me that Great Britain isn't just as capable of ruining great television.

Are you implying that America itself is doing this? Uhhhh.... Every show does go downhill at one point in literally any country and ideas aren't forever. Did you actually have to ask america to get this response? I'm gonna guess Canadian or Britain on your part.

(and by the way, in America we refer to them as 'seasons' not series.)

Well it doesn't happen all the time, sometimes we have amazingly great shows that get canceled before their time, like Samurai Jack.

It's a shame really, I started out with high hopes for "Heroes" but then it all sort of went downhill, "Wait, how about we let Sylar live guys?! YEAH! WE CAN CHANGE HIM!" I mean, if they just got rid of Sylar, stabilized the plot so that it didn't get obsessed with each of it's thousands of characters backstories, then it probably would have had high hopes.
Really? You quoted me to point out semantics?

Thanks.

Probably because after a TV show has been running for several seasons it gets more difficult to keep coming up with fresh idea's for the series.

This is funny because you didn't say best and television in your sentense, which is the whole joke.

The Wire is the single greatest series to ever be shown on tv, followed closely by The Sopranos. Both of those are American shows. God bless that country.

Also, I firmly believe, in fact I'd welcome challenges, that The Wire at the very minimum could have stayed for another season and not dropped an ounce in quality.

Worse than shows going on till infinity are shows that meander about for 2 seasons and get cancelled before any actual plot takes place.
Sons of Anarchy is something I'm really into right now. Sometimes I just fear that they'll lose their momentum before anything poignant actually happens. It's just something that happens with some shows that I've liked in the past.

Dexter season 5 hasnt been that good either.

Lets hope Breaking Bad wont suffer the same fate.
I dunno man. Dexter sort of follows a trend, as I see it. Season 1 was alright--nothing too special--and then season 2 was balls-to-the-walls incredible. I don't know about you, but I feel like it's been working like that. Still a great show, though.

Back to the main topic: I don't actually watch much TV anymore. The only things I still watch are the aforementioned Dexter, the Seth McFarland trio of shows (say what you will, I enjoy them), and Adventure Time. There aren't many other TV shows that have caught my attention. Though whenever I go to my mom's, I usually watch The Big Bang Theory, which is pretty damn funny.

PS. Is anyone else really pissed that they cancelled Flashforward?

No need to apologise. It was shit before it got to America.

Terrible, hipster, angsty bullshit that it was.

Oh come now, Series 1 and 2 weren't half bad. The rest I couldn't care less about, but the first couple had their moments.

Also, preemptive congrats on 4k posts
