Ohai dur Escapist, I was curious, I'ma DL these two anime soon, and I figured I'd ask you guys, which do you think is better, the sub, or the dub of Hellsing/Soul Eater? Also, I've recently watched almost all of my anime, and I was curious what you guys thought was good? I like anime with supernatural themes, and good character development. Fighting is also good, but it's not totally necessary. Examples of what I liked are: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Darker than Black, 11eyes, Clannad, Excel Saga, Welcome to the NHK,Elfen Lied, Toradora, Higurashi, Serial Experiments Lain, and Vandread. I like mecha/sci-fi too, or any anime that just does something....really unique, like vampires in a sci-fi future, or prehistoric mecha, or just random crazy mash-ups that shouldn't work, but do.

Depends what you like. Subtitles in movies don't bother me, but when it comes to anime I always go for the dubbed version. Just find it easier to watch for extended periods, plus I get to focus on all the cool visuals! I say this on every anime recommendation thread but if you haven't seen Full Metal Alchemist go buy it now!

(oh yeah and by DL I hope you mean after you paid for it on iTunes or something...)

xD! well, it was my understanding that fansubs are legal so long as it hasn't been licensed in your region, if they have, by all means getting the DVDs would just be easier then getting decent resolution episodes online, but all I'm interested in in the sub/dub debate is which has the higher quality voice-acting, and whether the translations stay true to the source material. Subs never really bother me, since I read fast enough, and kinda'...do it with my periphery, so I can watch the cool visuals of TTGL for example, and still be inspired by the epic motivational speeches ;P

I would watch dubbed for Hellsing, as the cast are actually European, so hearing them speak in the proper accents makes more sense.

Also Hellsing Ultimate is much better than the original, although it isn't finished.

Ah cool beans, Hellsing dubbed then. Also, added to my list, Code Geass, Fooly Cooly, and Death Note, all were epic xD

Given that both of your above-mentioned series have been licensed then, no, the fansubs are no longer legal.

Also, both support fairly solid dubs, surprisingly.

I prefer subs, just like hearing the original japanese soundtrack for no particular reason, and the subs don't bother me. However, definitely agree on the full metal alchemist, it's an amazing anime and it actually sounds like it's right up the OP's alley.
OT: try out buso renkin, it's very good, but I have no opinion on the two anime you mentioned, I've never seen them.

I Like both dub and sub. It usually depends on the voice acting, use to be ADV anime was never that great on dubbing but the industry has gotten better. I love Hellsing and Soul Eater and love watching them in dub. The voice acting in both are great. Also the nice thing Funimation does with Soul Eater and majority of their titles is put it on YouTube in both dub and sub so you can watch some in either format and see which one you like.

I Also recommend Full Metal Alchemist, but just like how Hellsing: Ultimate is better then Hellsing TV, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is SO much better then the old TV. Both Ultimate and Brotherhood are truer to the manga storyline. Funimation is working on bring the rest of Ultimate out soon. Also Try BACCANO! it a fun weird show with immortals, alchemists, gangsters, and alcohol bootlegging all taking place in the 1920's, 1930's America. So the Dub actually sounds more appropriate then the sub but again both are good.

I don't know about Hellsing, but with Soul Eater the dub voices aren't too bad in comparison with the original voices. So, it depends on if you'd rather read subtitles or not.

Well, I usually don't have a specific rule for sub/dub, but more which is easier to believe, For example, a bunch of contractors fighting with supernatural powers in a crazy alternate Japan....but they all speak English? Or on the other side, a group of European vampires duking it out amidst blood and carnage...but they're all speaking Japanese? :p So, I guess it's a really weird way of saying, whatever fits the setting ;P
