Noticed alot of -complaints- on topics repeating themselves here lately.
And often the source is from our new members. Welcome by the way.

So I'm starting a thread for Experienced Escapists to post their own Tips, Advice, Warnings or Things you would just like to see. To any of our new or future members to come.

I'll start with a few basics like.

Make sure you read back a few pages before starting another 'Has anyone...?' or 'Am I the only one....?' thread.
If you want to make friends. Tell them how nice their Minecraft castle is.
And
Try not to dislike something too much here because Escapsists -WILL- flame you and brand you as OP.
Choose your Avatar wisely.

Good Luck

Rule No. 1: Use the searchbar. If a similar topic has been inactive for at least three months (the last post in the thread is three months old) then it's okay to post your own. That's the way I see it, at least.

To be honest Newb starting repeat threads on the Escapist or anywhere is nothing new. The Escapist goes through phases of life and at the moment it is in its newb phase for this year. We haven't got to the more argumentative stages yet with mass banning and suspension. Although we haven't had the Escapist is too different since X so I am leaving in a long time.

OT: Use the search bar and spell check posts if you are a topic creator. Just makes it easier to read. If English is not a new users first language/they are dyslexic/tired get something like Google toolbar which has inbuilt spell check. Also don't hit the space bar after every sentence but do use the space bar. Walls of texts are hard to read so use paragraphs.

Okay, I guess I could post a few tips...
Avoid making versus threads, do not admit to or encourage piracy, don't insult other users, don't make posts that consist of a single word/image.
Those are just a few obvious ones that some people don't seem to get, so no harm in posting them here for all to see.
Might add more later, but I have other things to do now.

If you've got the time, check this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.202272-The-Escapist-Community-and-Forums-Codex-Index-Guides] out. Handy info thread of the site.

Don't make a thread about appealing your probation or simply expressing your disgust about the reasoning. The thread will be locked and you may suffer more mod wrath.

I would recommend PMing mods or visiting this group. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/chat/Moderation-Team]

This, this, this. Please use paragraphs.

Summarizing your post with a TL;DR at the bottom is also usually appreciated.

don,t anger the mod,s and read the rules
,don,t say you use a addblocker on the escapist
,don,t talk bad about the escapist
,don,t troll
,make sure you post threads in the right forum
,don,t be a dick or die-hard fanboy (being a fanboy is okay but don,t be a dick and learn to take criticism)
and make sure you use right spelling and grammar and don,t use 1337 5P34I< (or the removal of letters like: y instead of why or u instead of you) it makes it allot harder to read your post/comment

Also, read what people have posted in a thread before you. And, given you are on the net, it's easy to find information about anything if you're not sure about it, before posting what you think are facts.

I'll back this statement up!

Personally if you follow the forum enough you'll learn pretty quickly which are the topics that get repeated the most.

I suppose the big thing is don't be a big dick. By all means state your opinions just don't be an outstanding wanker about it.

1)Adblocker is bad set it to off for escapist or don't use one at all definately do not suggest it as a solution to "this ad sucks" type threads.
2)Do not make "this ad sucks" type threads
3)Do not flame the Escapist articles or content if you do not like it then do not read/watch it. We do not care that you think "this series sucks" a lot of us like the series or it would not be featured on the Escapist. Some authors like constructive criticism or well worded opposing viewpoints.
4)Do not be a Jerk
5)Do not feed the trolls, we have people for that. They give trolls all the love and care they need by whacking them with a banhammer
6)This is not your precious lawless internet wasteland, we have sheriffs here and they're packing heat
7)Everything is a repeat thread
8)No repeat threads within a month
9)If you think something is offensive don't post it, if you think its verging on offensive spoiler it and you may just get away with it.
10)The basement has candy, ponies and shiny stuff. It's warm and comfy. Such a nice place to be.

Fucking respect people. You may disagree but that doesn't give you the right to be a dick about it.

At least, that's what I've picked up during my time here.

Umm.... What do you think OP means because it appears that you think it means something different from what it is, at least, normally used for.

Uhm... You do know that 'OP' means 'Original Poster', right?

On topic:

1) Choose your words wisely.

2) Please at least TRY to spell correctly. We understand that typos and slips happen, but we have an 'Edit' button, don't be afraid to use it.

3) Don't post snarky comments. We all had the thought go through our head, but we were smart enough not to post it. Comedy rarely translates well to typed print.

Quoting someone sends them a p.m. that they have been quoted, and thus makes it easier for them to respond, instead of just replying to the message.

.
Very good advice, i nearly only get back to threads i was quoted in, if the topic isnt really really interesting. So if you honestly want a respond, quote.

Even if you actually are a prepubescent teenage girl who types EVERYTHING on your phone using the worst text chat in the universe, pretend that you're not, and write using some god damned full comprehensible sentences with all your words spelled out so that they actually mean something. That is to say, if you're going to bother to say anything, take the time to say it right.

For the love of God, know the difference between there, their, and they're. Because I have seen some seriously ridiculous mix ups and they just do not speak well to the overall intelligence of the people who have made them. There generally denotes a place, i.e. "Go there". Their shows possession, as in "it's their cat." And they're is the conjunctive form of they and are as in "they're not coming today." Please people, this is basic stuff.

When you see someone who has been banned, suspended, or put on probation, click that little link. Partially because every now and then you'll find something funny, but mostly because it'll give you a good idea of punishable offenses so that you can avoid making them yourself.

There, Their, They're -"Over there they're playing with their toys."
Were, Where, Wear - "What were they wearing and where were they going?"
Than, Then - "Then I said that X was better than Y"
Your, You're - "You're going to play your games"
Bare, Bear - "That bear was furless, he was bare from snout to tail."
Loose, Lose - "That button is loose, if you are not careful you will lose it".
Its, It's - "It's great when playing with its toys"
i.e., e.g. - "..a good game (e.g., Dawn of War)" "I went to the dentist (i.e, a terrible experience)
Affect, Effect - "The game's knock-on effect really affected me" (ignore the nonsense example)

Excuse the grammar lesson but these ones crop up a lot on the forums and people will quote you on them occasionally. Do not rely on spell check to know the difference. Comma usage and apostrophes are habitually butchered everywhere so no one really minds about those. Everyone makes mistakes but the rest of us try to spot them and ninja edit them out.
