Alright, I'm sorry to create an entire topic about this, but I searched and nothing came up.

Anyway, I just recently got into Steam, and I've played a few games of TF2. However, as I'm sure many of you know, TF2 is a game which practically requires voice chat, but I don't know where I can get a mic that will work (I'm usually a 360 gamer, sue me). So, what kind of mic will work and where can I get it? Thanks in advance.

Just about any Electronics stor, Walmart, pretty much anywhere computer stuff is sold. I suggest getting something made by logitech. It tends not to break (fuck you dynex) and is fairly cheap.

Are we talking about PC headsets w/ mic?

If such is the case, just go to your local electronics store or whatever and get a headset. Should PROBABLY be somewhere near the other computer stuffs.

I like Logitech, though - they may be a little more expensive than some of the other stuffs, but the quality of their products are great.

Learn to type faster.

Actually, just go and get a cheap mic or headset, if it's for the pc it'll work. I second Logitech on value for money. My £2 mouse has worked for years.

I know you can get headset/standalone mics that have a 3.5mm port, which is the same used for regular iPod headphones and stuff, or a USB one. I know Newegg.com sell a huge variety of them and I know some Gamestops sell a few. You can pretty much get one at any computer/electronics store.

So, any USB mic will work? I could actually use my Rockband mic? Weird, but alright until I buy a headset. Thanks.

TF2 is on the 360, and the PC, please clarify which one you're talking about.

If PC, then use any headset. (Most electronics [http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=abcat0515040&type=category] stores will have them [http://www.officedepot.com/a/browse/computer-headsets/N=5+9370&Ne=100/], and you can find 'em online too.)
Depending on your computer, you may need one of two types:
Microphone Slot Headset - While functional for most computers, some computers do not have a Microphone Slot. The benefit of this is that if it does, that's all it'll need.
USB Headset - This works on all computers, since some don't have microphone slots. The only downside is you're burning off a USB slot, which I will often fill to capacity when I'm at my computer.

If for the 360, then use the pre-provided microphone, or purchase another one.

I understand your confusion, but I said in the OP I bought it over Steam, so PC. Thanks, btw.

EDIT:When you say mic slot, what do you mean? I have two ports for headphones, but somehow that doesn't seem right.
EDIT#2: Nevermind, I found the mic port (I'm a dumbass)

One should be green and one should be pink. Mic goes in the pink.

you can even use a webcam mic which leaves you able to wear a decent pair of head phones

I don't know if you're Rock Band mic will work but any USB or line-in mic designed to work with a computer will work.

Whoops, my bad. Oversight on my part.

Anyway, Mic slots vary from computer to computer. My humble set looks a little like this:

As far as individuals go, usually, they're color-coded, Mic being an off-shade of pink. Most times, microphone plugs will reflect that as well.

If your computer has a sound card there are jacks in the back that you might want to use.

I use a 20 dollar Logitech microphone, and it does the job swimmingly.
