Well, my X-Box Live account got hacked, but I got a new one and IT got hacked, presumedly by the same person, and I have no clue why. So now, before I set up my third, I want to make it as secure as possible, I got a new e-mail adress, secured my internet connection, and am going to use a totally different gamertag, as the first two were very similar. I've sent an e-mail to microsoft about the first hacking, and intend to call customer support.

So do YOU, the Escapist community, have any ideas on how to better secure my account, or on what course of action to take?

All thoughts and opinions are much appreciated.

EDIT:I've got a much better password and intend to greater secure my Live account, but before I give it another go, does anyone know of any legitimate, reliable, andfree/cheap virus scanning programs?

P.S. Thanks for the response everybody!

Figure out who the hacker was, buy a gun, go to his house, and shoot him in the kneecaps and elbows.
He'll remember not to fuck with you.

Good luck with the keeping it from being hacked. Also, make sure that your other accounts are locked down. Don't want that hacker rewarded for his efforts.

If you remember your secret question then you should be able to get both of them back.

If you're using a wireless network connection then that might be the weak link which has allowed the bastard to grab your account.

Password your gamertag, get a more secure password, remember your secret code.

also, if this has happened twice. You may have a keylogger, run a virus scan.

Edit: Yeah, I'm thinking either keylogger, or a douchey friend. Try unticking the remember me thing, and running a virus scan, and maybe setting up an encrypted VPN (if it is your wireless) or using a hardline.

Gamertags are usually "hacked" by people calling Microsoft and using your personal information to have them reset your password and send it to a new email account. Make sure you don't give out any personal information on XBox Live.

Huh.
Never would have thought of that.
OnTopic: Just do what you're doing right now, it seems like the best thing to do in this type of situation.

Bravo sir
but first actually tell him who you are so he has a sort of idea why your horrificly mutilating him. I would also suggest scraping out his eye's with a rock

Don't bother with calling customer support, it never ends well, then

All thoughts and opinions are much appreciated.

Step 1) Figure out how your first accounts were stolen (I mean technically) - If you can't find that out then.

Step 2) Find out how xbox accounts can be hacked- in general. Use google.

Step 3) Secure against the methods you discover in step 2. - That is I'm afraid the only way to do it.
