Not long ago there was a thread in which an a forum member (duh) asked to have music recommended to him, and you guys did a pretty good job. I ask you now to recommend some music to me, would you kindly?

I probably give you some music I like now:

Animals as leaders
Shadow of the colossus (admittedly, i prefer their instrumental to their other songs, so no... 'br00tal' death metal or anything please...)
Cynic
Gorillaz
Opeth
Agalloch
Downlink (yes, I like a bit of dubstep, especially the song boom by datsik and excision)
Katy B (just the song, On a mission, sometimes i'm in the mood...)
From Exile (under-rated indie band, although only their new album is any good)
Jimi Hendrix
Textures
Mastodon
and Bullet for my Valentine (just kidding! IMO they're the epitome of the sh*t that gives metal a bad name)

EDIT: I guess the forums asleep (?) now, I'M gonna go to sleep and see if I get any replies tomorrow... help me please

EDIT EDIT (lol): changed a bit of the opening post and the title of the thread, to seem less like an attention seeker deprived of what he most sorely needs...

EDIT EDIT EDIT: yeah, I started this thread when i was sleepy, so I forgot to mention quite a few bands I like. Sorry about that, I mainly listen to rock/prog/metal, jazz, a bit of dubstep and some hip-hop.

bands I forgot to mention:

Radiohead
Metallica
Iron Maiden
The Pixies
Pantera
Porcupine Tree
The Prodigy
Nirvana
and probably a few more oh, and I've probably already heard of all the obvious artists ;) oh yeah... protest the hero, I like them too. And between the buried and me. And Pink Floyd and... this is pointless

Sadly I can't quite get into either band myself, but if you're a fan of Cynic you'll probably enjoy Athiest. Based on some of the other prog/extreme metal stuff that I recognize from that list you might like latter-day Death, Augury, and Necrophagist.

If you're more into the Prog side than the heavy side you might enjoy more melodic Prog Metal bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X, or Control Denied.

Also here are a few personal favorites - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, and Iced Earth - because it would be remiss of me to go through a thread like this without attempting to introduce you to them.
Maiden and Priest are hard to represent with just one song, but these are some of their most popular.

As you've likely gathered I'm a big Classic Metal fan, so I've really been enjoying the revival that's been going on as of late, particularly White Wizzard and Holy Grail. Also, any day I get a chance to share this White Wizzard video is a good day.
Nothing is wrong with this. Ever

There you go. Hopefully you enjoyed something out of all that.

I'm afraid I could never really 'dig' Chuck shuldinger's screams, they take some getting used to so I'm exactly where you stand on the whole atheist/death thing, when I said Cynic i probably should have mentioned I meant their second album, Traced In Air (epic album btw, would recommend to anyone who doesn't hate slightly vocoded vocals). I've heard of necrophagist, but they were always too heavy for me (strange how Shadow of the Colossus isn't though).

How could I forget the classics!? I guess it was a bit late for me, I forgot completely about mentioning dio, iron maiden etc. I like some maiden songs, like the trooper. But apart from that Classic metal doesn't appeal to me that much, I admit to enjoying White Wizzard (I love it when bands make fun of themselves :D) problem is, i'm just the kinda guy who enjoys Jazz, not unlike that weird purple-robe wizard guy (although I don't hate metal, obviously, if anything metal mixed with jazz makes some of my favourite metal)

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give death another try (their new album doesn't seem so bad)
and I'll keep an eye on White Wizzard ;)

Late 80's, Early 90's Alternative...

Some of my favorite bands...
I won't even bother posting Smells Like Teen Spirit...

If you like metal, you might be interested in Blind Guardian.
Ever listened to Radiohead? They're quite popular.
Can't really deduct more from the bands you like.
I've never found a band that sounds quite like Gorillaz.

A few days ago my little brother made me aware of a Danish band called Volbeat. He got me intrigued by telling me they were commonly categorized as 'Elvis Metal'.
I've since listened to their latest album, and while I'm not sure I see the Elvis reference, it is a really quirky mix of metal, country, punk, rockabilly and more.

Damn Youtube has almost completely purged studio albums. This was the only song in decent quality I could dredge up, but it's a good one.

AH! You're like the only person I've ever seen to even know who Agalloch are.

Unfortunately, since you specified nothing too "br00tal" I don't have much to contribute, and most of what I could has been ninja'd.

Maybe this.

THANK YOU

I heard that song ages ago on Bandcamp, never been able to find the band since. Good they've been signed to a decent Label ;)

EDIT: when I said 'br00tal' I meant necrophagist brutal, not agalloch or even whitechapel brutal

I can help with a few of these. Let's see what I can dig up.

For Agalloch (Good choice by the way) Check out Woods of Ypres and Alcest.
For The Pixies give Frank Black's solo work a try. As well as The Breeders who are Kim Deal's band.
For some of the others here's a few options. Failure, Sonic Youth, Portishead, PJ Harvey. I know I can think of more but my brain isn't letting me. Start with those.

Ok, i've just edited my OP to include some bands I forgot about and the genres I find most appealing. Whaddya know? Radiohead's in that list. Thanks for introducing me to blind guardian though, nothing like a new band to listen to :D

That just reaffirms my statement that you probably don't want to hear most of my possible suggestions. To me Necrophagist is nothing, but if you're daring...
Or maybe a little...

you're welcome! if you like Cream then I'd also recommend Derek and the Dominos, who featured the same guitarist; they only had one album but it's a masterpiece

Anything from the 90's or earlier, particularly bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and the Smashing Pumpkins.
