If I can get past the occasional CTD when the intro plays, I get black screen whenever I try to start a new game. I've even gone as far ast to downloading someone else's saved game and trying to load that, but then the game freezes when I press "yes." It seems to be the same problem I had with Oblivion (Oblivion ran great before this happened). To add further insult to injury, when I try to install the patch, I get an error that says something along the lines as "Old file found, but file differs" or something or other. Anyone know of a fix?

Dxdiag can be found in this thread: http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=930135

Some help is greatly appreciated.

I can't really help you here since I'm getting it on the 360. Getting games for the consoles is much easier than the PC since you don't have to deal with all this crap. Just pop in the game and play it, nothing more.

That comment is so un-helpful that the rest of this thread is inevitably going to consist of an exchange of specifications and know how on why your 400-2000 dollars was better spent. Or mabye it wont.

I'm just saying. Personally, I can't even begin to imagine what people go through just to get games working. I've never had a single problem with a console. I got the red ring once, but I got my 360 back in a week and it's been fine since. Of course, PC's can provide better graphics and performance than consoles, but I just don't want to deal with everything else that comes with that.

Oh, I totally understand where your coming from. I'm pretty well console exclusive myself. I was just pointing out that the person who made this thread clearly invested in PC gaming, and I doubt that someone telling him that was mistake is going to fix the problem, or even remedy the annoyance with not even being able to play.
Really though, I just saw that the first post after the initial one was along the lines of "CONSOLEZ FOOL", and I thought it was funny.

and this thread has descended into consoles vs PC's and the OP has received zero help with his problem
It hasn't, I just stated that I can't understand PC gamers (as in I'm a cheap bastard who can't afford to get a good computer and keep it up to date so I just stick with consoles).

Maybe Eipok you can stop being an insufferable fanboy goit? You had no purpose posting here other than to say "LOLPC" so please, don't carry on. Same goes for your continuous EVE fanboyism. Knock it off.

I hate reading DXDiags, but looking at it, firstly Fallout 3 hates mobile processors, secondly the drivers look a little old. Try updating them to see if it has any effects (I am referring to your GFX card).

Also try running it in the lowest possible GFX settings to see if it helps at all. Sorry I'm not much more help, my usual bug-fixing routine is very much trial and error, which requires me to have the thing in front of me =)

And I answer with a "MEH!" I'd love to have these problems actually. It would mean I have a computer powerful enough to run these games in the first place, alas, my current computer is not up to that point. Although, I'm somewhat technically challenged when it comes to computers. meh And sorry if I come across as extremely fanboyish, I'm just saying my bit (and being jealous of the OP cause he has a computer that wasn't the result of an explosion in a girder factory).

Nope. You're still saying 'LOLPC'.
I am? I thought I was saying "Awwww I wish I had a nice computer so I could play games like Fallout 3 with nicer graphics than you can get on the consoles." At least that's what I was trying to say. Consoles are the cheap alternative, but if you have the money, you should shoot for a nice PC.

Anyone who thinks games like this are better on Console are silly. And this is unbiased because I play both PC and console >:) Fighting, Racing, Button-combo etc are better on console. RPG, RTS, FPS (and everything else) are better on PC.

On Topic: Reinstall it, but like, the magic way. There's a way (should be on the bethesda) site for completely removing the game and everything associated with it from your HDD. When you install it again it should be perfect.

Well, I don't know how to fix the problem, but here are a few solutions nonetheless:

It might have been your disc, solve by getting a replacement or an .iso file somewhere.
It might be something with your comp, try a reformatting.
Alternatively, copy a friend's succesful installation and use it instead of your own. If nobody you know own the game, you could try installing your game on their machine, if the problem persists it's probably a problem with the disc and you might be able to get a replacement.

Or if you're willing to pay for some advice and don't mind being put on hold for a while, you could call up tech support. (sorry if you've already done this, but I find actually talking to someone a far less painful experience than trying to work out problems by putting myself out there to the mercy of the internet.)

Have you tried starting it without the disk? There is a fallout3.exe in the the game folder that allows you to run the game without the disk. It might work, otherwise I can only advice you to try the official FO3 forums at Bethesda. I have not had any problems, but then again I run it on xp and not vista. Is it a 64 or a 32 bit vista? There has as far as I remember been some problems with vista 64.

It's a trade off for inferior gameplay.

And, going to be basic here but: tried reinstalling it?
