Just don't listen to music, and don't label things. "Screamo" pisses me off. There are a lot of truly talented musicians in the metal genre and this new wave of teenage boys in spandex is ruining it for everyone.

Screamo is a legit genre, and isn't even derived from metal. It's an offshoot of hardcore punk. It just so happens it's misused a lot, like emo and post-hardcore being used as alternative terms for pop punk.

Also, GEE IT SURE IS VARIED IN HERE WITH ALL THIS METAL, "CLASSIC" ROCK, METAL, AND METAL.

Yes yes I know there is a specific type of music that the term pertains to. Unfortunately the it is so misused now it's starting to encroach upon all forms of metal that don't use clean vocals. Also the reason metal is used so much is (not to sound like a dick, not that I care) very popular on this website. For good reason to since it does in most instances contain the most technically sound music and lyrics that usually mean something.

Go there, create an account (it's free) and give it maybe three artists you like. You can add related artists and it will shuffle them in randomly as well as some new music.

For actual band recommendations I'd have to know what you like and what you've heard. Something I've shown a lot of people and nobody's disliked: Imaginary Cities (they're not obscure enough that you can't find them on iTunes, apparently, but they have a myspace music with a wider selection). My favourites: Green Day's getting better all the time and the Beatles are still oddly relevant (their mid-career stuff is the best, in my opinion, also note that I grew up two generations post-Beatles). Flying Fox and the Hunter-Gatherers (another obscure band from my hometown) is, as well, something that nobody really dislikes, though they can be a bit strange. Then the jazz greats are always nice to listen to once in a while (a little bit of John Coltraine never really did any harm). And everyone likes Arcade Fire.

I'm more of an indie guy, if you want something harder, I can run around and ask people (most of my friends are into metal, which is completely understandable).

Edit: probably good advice to stay away from simple plan and any "top 40 hits" list.
