So I'm leaving school, and I'm riding my breaks following this old beat up rusted out Toyota (like 1980's)pickup truck and he slams on his breaks as I'm looking down at my AC Controls and wham! a less than 5mph collision no noticeable damage to his truck (other than the crap of a car he had before) and my license plate is bent, but other than that nothing wrong. No police or insurance companies were called. We traded info my insurance company and name. (Looking back probably bad idea to not have gotten his, but I'm 16 and i was scared sh*tless, so needless to say I didn't know what to do)

What can I do, and what happens to me and my insurance rates?

EDIT

I hit a steel hitch and a steel bumper, my plastic Bumper is fine so basically no damage. except my license plate

EDIT 2 I had a witness in the car (don't know if that matters)

Take pictures. I hit a parked car when there was snow out. Later he did a bunch of damage to it, but we had the picture to prove I didn't cause it. Also, paying out of pocket, or accident forgiveness may be options.

Edit: No damage on his truck? You might get off the hook.

You did the right thing. You have his information, so if you're that worried, just call him and follow up on it. Just say hello, and say that you wanted to ask how him and his truck were and make sure that he didn't want to file a claim. If he still doesn't want to, then nothing will happen to your insurance at all.

I had something similar happen to me in a QFC parking lot. I backed out and a guy in a large minivan idly (here meaning "extremely slowly") backed into me. My car was lightly damaged, a slight bubble in the rear driver-side door. I could tell that he didn't see me and his van suffered no damage.

I ended up waving him away and we never exchanged information or called police, which sounds like what happened to you. While technically speaking you were at fault, it depends on how much he cares about his car and you care for yours. If he cared so much about his car, he would've immediately called his insurance company or you would've call yours.

It seems to me that considering the minute amount of damage and no mechanical failures for either party, your rates will stay the same. Minor scrapes are no big deal and I suppose if you reported it your rates would not skyrocket. You say you're 16, so if you felt like it you could ask your parents about what would happen. It was good to have his insurance information, but if somebody hasn't called you already I'm sure you would be notified if the other driver wanted to contact your insurance company.

If the car is fine, and there is no damage outside of the license plate, don't worry about anything. Don't bother telling your insurance if you aren't getting any work done that is over the deductible. That will just raise your rates. It is just a raw deal, but you will be fine.
