Sedatives (start with something mild like melatonin and if that doesn't work after a week, graduate up to Benadryl or something similar---if that fails, get a doctor to prescribe you the heavy-duty knock-out drops).

And on the other side of that, if you're using caffeine, stop or at least restrict it to prior to 2 PM, no later.

Afternoon naps, while relaxing, are the bane of healthy sleep at night.

And of course, if you can swing it, finding someone to have sex with until you collapse from exhaustion helps too.

Ok. I don't see the problem. You really can only be diagnosed with insomnia if it persists for more than 2 weeks. Otherwise I can list some treatments that have been proven to help.

1. Only use bed and bedroom for sleeping and sex
2. If you can't fall asleep in 20 minutes, get up and do something else in another room until you are tired
3. Get up at the same time each day.
4. Go to bed only when sleepy at night

Edit: Upon reflection my treatments are only for prolonged insomnia rather than a single case. At which point I suggest a biological approach which is pills or masturbation.

Friend of mine suffered from insomnia. What the doctor told him to do was try to go to bed like normal, at around say 8 or 9 pm.

If he woke up, he was to stay awake again until 9 pm the next night. Repeat if he wakes up again. Eventually, his body was supposed to force itself into normal circadian rhythm (sleep/wake cycle) and he'd be ok. Took nearly 3 months, but it worked without drugs.

Naps really? I find a nap after work to be just the thing.
OT: I've had insomnia a few times and it was always because something was on my mind. If that's the case try calling someone and talking about it.

Just one night without sleeping? It's 6am where i am too and i've been up later than this for the past week.

Seriously it's nothing to worry about. Your sleeping patterns might get a little shaky but it should balance out over time.

As another guy said, masturbate. Or read before bed. I like to read webcomics before I go to bed. Cyanide and Happiness is my favourite, but to each his own. Not sure where you live, but where I live, at a local pharmacy, you can find chewable sleeping pills, no prescription, no addiction or any cons. They taste pretty good too. Sleep when tired, but that can usually lead to a very weird sleep schedule.

When I have a thought that keeps me up at night, it's usually one of the best thoughts that come to mind in a while, and I consider it a disservice to myself not to write it down or post it on some forum.

You could do this. Maybe do some sit ups.

Or do what I do, stare at a wall until you get sleepy.

You bastard!
What I liked the first album but the drum and bass heavy tracks like Double Bass, Tomorrow Comes Today, and Left Hand Suzuki Method are very relaxing...

Oh. I thought you were calling it boring and therefore shite.

I agree.

And the "You bastard!" was a joke, if that really was your opinion it wouldn't be my business.

I have generally the same problem right now, my only suggestion is drink very cold milk before you go to sleep, it has helped me quite a bit.
