If you can find Civ4 at a decent prize, I would recommend that instead. The gameplay is better, the AI is far superior and it looks quite decent still.

Killing Floor has RPG elements, and I've wasted a lot of time on it. It's only twenty, last I remember. Oh, and don't get the DLC, it's just a cosmetic difference.

Fallout 3/New Vegas, if you want something action-y. Or Diablo 2, also quite action-y. Mass Effect is basically pushing the limits on the Action -> RPG spectrum, if you want to give that a look.

If you liked the Total War games, chances are that you might be into RTSs. If so, I'd give Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun or C&C 3 a try. Age of Empires 2 is also a classic. Most of the games mentioned above are dirt cheap now.
