I'm a noob, and terrible at TF2. But I'm having a lot of fun playing engie - shotguns are effective + satisfying, sentries absolutely wreck people (and teach you the maps), and mindgames with the minisentries are fun. Would recommend it to anyone starting up. From what I hear, noobs also get good results with W+M1 pyro :)

I played several hours today. I can see where the enjoyment comes from. There's just one thing ruining it for me. I seem to die almost instantly from nearly every weapon, yet it takes me so much more to kill someone.

I don't know if it's lag or what. For example, if a pyro shoots me with flames I pretty much die the second it contacts me. But I have to hold the flamethrower on them for 4-5 seconds to kill them. And even then, half the time they don't die. Or a shotgun kills me in 1-2 bullets. But I have to shoot 4-5 close range to kill them.

I had a little more luck when I finally found a server with low ping. So it probably is lag. But even when I set the server search to Australia only I have 150+ ping most of the time.

Tomorrow I'll go through all the servers to find a good one. Because it's deffo a fun game. Does anyone know some good Aussie servers?

The point of TF2 is that it's not realistic. It's fun in a cartoony way with overblown characters, weapons environments and settings.

Tf2, at it's base, is very balanced.
it's also colourful, cheery, funny.
It's the sort of environment that encourages just random fun.

I've NEVER seen the sort of person who goes super srs all out clans and scrims and eliteism on TF2.
Which is a common trend in the CoD games and such.
It's just a different environment that's.. Just.. Fun.

There are some more advanced/harder to pull off moves that can kill someone who is taken unaware.

In your example with the Flamethrower, it sounds as if you're a victim of "puff and sting". This is a move in which a Pyro will light you on fire, switch to an unlockable weapon (The Axetinguisher) and melee you with it. This will deal massive damage very quickly but has to be done on either a cornered or immobile enemy to be able to be performed frequently.

Also, in your shotgun example, he could have simply gotten a crit which deals massive damage. For the most part, these are random. But, some servers have crits turned off to make the gameplay more consistent.

Remember that unless you're a Medic; your health will not regenerate without being healed by either a Medic, a health kit, or other outside force. I know it is silly to remind you of this. But, some players I've seen have asked about that and that could also be an issue.

The most fun I've ever had with a game has been had with TF2. It does, however, take a day or two of adjusting. The guns often don't seem as responsive as they should be when coming from games like Battlefield or COD. It's a very different style of game. Something that helped me get more into it was turing on numerical damage indicators, so that I knew I was making progress, even on my first day.

Also keep in mind: each class requires a very different style of play, and none of these styles are similar to more realistic twitch-shooters. You can't charge in, shoot people with guns, and expect them to die before you do, simply because you shot first.

So there is an adjustment period. Once you get a hang of the styles, TF2 becomes a game unmatched in amount of sheer fun. If you want to get a hang of the playing styles faster, you can read guides online, or simply watch how other players play. I learned a number of techniques in spectator mode.

From what you say it seems you like most of the console shooters out there. TF2 was designed to be basically the antithesis of these types of shooters: Instead of a singlle baseline player who can buy weapons that are direct upgrades, TF2 has 9 completely different and balanced classes with weapons that are all sidegrades. Its over the top, cartoony style doen't sound like something that would appeal to you, but that's fine. You don't have to like everything mainstream-I love Men In Black, but hate Independence Day.
