Help me get into Dr.Who (again)

My history with Dr.Who is as follows:
I started with the "New Who/Ninth Doctor" and I really liked it. A lot.
First thing which weirded me out about the show (because I didn't know about the past doctors) was the changing of the actors since I really liked Eccleston and was (and still am) annoyed by Tennant (it is more about the actors themselves as the "Morphing" as an integral part of the entire show).

And the first season had so many strong moments with "The Empty Child" among others, the finale was awesome and then you start the tenth season with "New Earth" and this (sorry, deeply annooooyying) Tennant. A friend forced me to watch further but again "Tooth and Claw"....yeah...I can watch that but why on earth is there this huge cult around the show. Is it just Tennant that sets me off? I watched "Blink" (Steven Moffat always works for me ("Coupling" and "Sherlock" hooray), which is a great epsiode but can't somehow get really into the show again.

And today I read this (in parts)

and thought, hell, I really want to like that show. Do I just skip the Tennant-seasons and try Matt Smith and move forward from there?

Personally, I liked Tennant more than Eccleston or Smith.

But, after Tennant's run, there was a fairly clean break. New Dr, but also new companions, Moffatt replaced RTD at the helm, and so on.

So maybe give Smith a try, yeah.

Personally I did like Smith more as the Doctor, but I fine I'm in the minority when I say that. Although I have to admit I like Capaldi more then him. He's an ass hole and it's grate. And anyway there's kind of a "soft" reset when they Smith is introduced so you won't really be missing anything if you do decide to skip.

I know I'm speaking only for myself, but as another who preferred Eccleston I have to say that Smith's run saw a very noticeable and consistent decline in quality, one so bad that the latest series broke the camel's back for me and now I'm out completely.

Hm, so I will give Mr. Smith a try :) And see where that leads me. It just might be not completely made to tingle my funny bone, the show. But I will try once more. Thanks for your tips.

I've watched a decent amount of classic Who, and Capaldi's first season was my first Nu-Who watching experience. Honestly, Capaldi was wasted on many atrocious episodes with too much of a focus on Clara and her annoying boyfriend alongside some very, very poor writing. The fact they pulled a plot-macguffin out their asses right at the end of the Christmas special to keep her in has put me off it completely - and apparently a lot of other people too, as the new season's first episode saw a huge drop in ratings.

If you want to try some good Who, go classic and try Tom Baker, he's probably my favourite.

Personally, the quintessential Doctor for me will always be Tom Baker. If you don't mind cheesy special effects and laughable fight scenes you may want to consider giving the fourth Doctor a spin if you haven't already.

For me it's Sylvester Mccoy, for some reason...probably Ace actually.

Smith is awesome, in my opinion, though he ends up in some pretty awful episodes. Of course, the dirty secret is that pretty much every Doctor had his ups and downs (though I honestly never liked Hartnells run, and didn't even really think of the Dalek origin as truly great). Thing is, if you like the actor, it makes many of these fun.

If not...well....

It looks like you're going to try it already, but what other people say is right. While there are multiple callbacks and references, Series Five is almost a standalone series, which makes sense. Stories have it Moffat wanted to do a reboot, and the BBC said no. This is as close to a reboot as you could pragmatically get. You don't miss much for not having seen prior seasons. Plus, Smith is fun.

Thanks again for all the input, I might even try classic Doctors now, I hadn't considered that. Thanks to Netflix that most is easily available :)

And Smith it is, too.

I will never understand how people get so attached to Ecclestone when he only did one season... It takes me longer than that to fall in love with a Doctor!

My fave is probably Matt Smith though, for first bringing back a bit of oldschool doctor quirkiness with his bowtie and quirky outfits, Ecclestone and Tennant didnt have that 'Dorky professor' feel that most other Doctors have had.
