Help Me Learn German

So, last Summer my BF went studying abroad in Germany, and learned how to speak German (of course). But, when he came back to LA, no one really could talk to him in German and now he can only really say random phrases from time to time. I want to surprise him by learning German and be able to hold a conversation with him. My only problem is the Rosetta Stone CD's are waaay to expensive. So, my question to all y'all is: do any of you know a cheaper CD that will effectively help me learn German? thanks =D

Well, the way I learned English was by reading books and watching TV shows in English.
So... well, I liked South Park and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, why not start with something similar that you like? Nothing too difficult. And don't try watching German news (that's the hint the English teacher gave us but I found it to be almost worthless), it has to be something you actually enjoy and want to do repeatedly. Turning on the German news once or twice won't help at all, watching your favorite TV series will.
Now, you probably need some knowledge of German for that to work, though, so... I dunno, start with something really simple but quickly work your way up. The main part is understanding some of the language, learning to write or speak yourself comes automatically the more of it you consume.
