Ok, so I'm from the UK and have recently graduated uni. I now wanna do a masters, and I wanna do it in Canada (or Canadia as I thought it was called until one embarrassing day in year 7 french class).

Anywho, I was wondering if anyone else has actually done this or something similar themselves, and if they might be willing to share their experience, i.e Please help me, is it worth it? is it easy to do?

Thanks

(ps. my degree was in physics and I'm thinking of doing medical physics at Uvic)

Do you mean move to Canada and go to college there, or go to a school in Canada through your school.
I'm going to attend a school in London, but it will be through a program that my school offers.

Well, Canada's a nice place, especially for students.I suggest going over there (UVic = U of Victoria,BC?)for a week or two to see if you like the place but yeah, go for it :)

It's the application process I dislike. I'm awful at actively pursuing something. I'm a drifter, and I've reached an end point to the drift. ether that or I'll stay a shop assistant for the rest of my days :p

Thanks Dude.

I went to the University of Manchester. It was pretty difficult, but I didn't put much work into it. I found all the modules I was interested in, like particle and medical physics, weren't available until the third year. The first two years were full of maths and the quantum physics modules were repetitive.

BUT If you enjoy maths and physics It'll be a breeze

Medical... Physics?

That's a thing!?
Yeah, just think of it as physics applied to medicine, like medical imaging and machines - X-rays, NMR's, MRI's ect.
There's also nuclear medicine, radiotherapy.

The possibilities are endless...

EDIT- I don't know why I quoted the poster above me there... Apologies. Its habitual I guess

I may be able to help a little bit.
Are you already sure of where you want to go?
Cause I hear University of Calgary is really good.
My friend said his physics teacher was on the LHC team.

well if you do come to Canada, then i'm going to suggest University of Waterloo for physics cause the Perimeter Institute is there along with Stephen Hawking, tho the University of Guelph does have The Great Orbax [http://www.monstersofschlock.com/burnaby-q-orbax.html] teaching there and yes he really is a side show performer.

tho if you want to do medicine then you want MacMaster or University of Toronto, seriously can't get any better than those too

Canada is nice, tho i'll say you should dress warmly and a lot less hooligan ridden than Manchester

just done a quick search on Calgary. Looks good, and has and my course, thanks for the tip.

I'm not really sure of where I want to go, I've only been researching for about half a day thus far.

It just seems like applying is an international student is effort, and I'm pretty lazy.

Yeah the maths was pretty sucky, not exactly my forté.
I've mentally blocked out quite alot of it. For me it only ever made any sense the night before the exam. It would all come together, and that would give me enough to scrape by.

You should be fine though if you made it through the killer second year :p

Feel free to ask anything though, I may just have some helpful trick or something - though no promises. It's likely you already know more than me.

Well Calgary University I think gets a good amount of international students, so they might have an easier process, I'm not sure. But they seem especially attractive due to their large amount of government funding, they have great facilities and from what I hear are also quite affordable. Hooray for Alberta's new found oil industry.
The only downside I can think of is that Alberta is full of bible thumpers.
And I hear they don't take too kindly to liberals round them parts. But don't worry, that doesn't reflect at all on the university, which is why them bible types don't like it.
So says my friend at least.
But I think even Alberta can be considered liberal compared to the States, and I'm pretty sure it's only Alberta that's like that.
And I mean no offense if you are religious. Since I'm describing as my friend described to me as 'over the top persons'

Cool, I want to do a physics degree after my A-levels. Was it easy to get onto the course and what subjects did you take?

OT: I'm actually planning the same thing, possibly to go into the police force in one of the provinces. Good luck for the future.

I did Physics, Chemistry and Maths for A-level, Plus an AS in Drama.

It was alright getting on the course via ucas. I did get rejected by Durham, but that was a computer error... Or so I choose to believe... With no solid evidence...or any evidence at all...

I recommend Manchester, Its got a great Physics department, and they gave me 1,500 quid for getting 3A's which was sweet. If this Canada idea falls through I'm gonna apply to Manchester for a masters in analytical and separation science.

Also, thanks Gelp for the extra info. It's good to have extra knowledge that won't be on the uni websites to help any decisions along.

Alberta is also very expensive and would cost a ton of money to live there

and honestly both McMaster and the UofT have programs for it and would honestly be better.

the UofT is where insulin was discovered and a few other medical discoveries and probly one of the best universities you can go to, also for the geeky side it's where the new Hulk movie was filmed and same with the Skulls

as for McMaster, they have their own hospital

I'm kind of the opposite, i live in the US really close to canada and have always considered studying abroad in the UK, maybe in London or at St. Andrews.
