Let me first say, I love Silent Hill. I love FEAR. I love surivial horror games because of their commitment to satisfying the player and the grotesquely interesting monsters.

With this said, I have never beaten a survival horror game. And I'm 18. I have never gotten past 2 hours with Dead Rising, Silent Hill, or FEAR. I suck at being scared. I suck at ammo conservation. I suck at survival horror games.

Therefore, I made a promise to myself. I am going to beat Dead Space. I Hereby swear it on the internet!

But I need your help. How do you beat a survival horror? What are some game tips? What are some anti-scare tips? Please help me live!

You need to resist the urge to waste ammo when you don't need it and run away from the enemies rather than fighting them if you can.

If you're afraid of video games scaring you though, then you've missed the point of survival horror entirely and I respectfully advise you to grow a pair.

Well... um.... hm.

I can't really see ammo conservation being a problem in Dead Rising, which means that the game was simply too scary for you to be able to beat it (assuming you didn't just get bored).

And if something as relatively tame as Dead Rising was too scary for you, I'm thinking you may not be quite ready for Dead Space. Horror just might not be your thing.

It's okay, man. I suck at ammo conservation too. I beat Bioshock on normal mode no problem, I had so much fun I'm playing it through again. But hard mode? Where the Splicers become almost impossible to kill unless you constantly get headshots? I couldn't survive. And don't get me started on RE:4.

For something like Deadspace, I would suggest investing in a crying towel. Maybe two.

ok mate ive got an idea for you

later this year left4dead comes out. its a zombie survival game, except in this one you get to play it with 3 other people.

so, to overcome your fear in these games, i'd suggest getting this game when it comes out, and having some mates help you through it, because there is nothing like a buddy by your side to keep you going.

if you can finish the game with them, i'm sure you'll be a long way to reducing that fear and beating other survival horror games.

How I overcome fear is by just sucking it up and playing through as much of the game as I can in one sitting, then having some cookies and milk with some soothing music...shut up!!!
And for ammo conservation, I would just say run, aim for the head, and don't spray and pray.

First off: take it slow. your primary advantage in survival horror games is range, so you don't want to run straight into an enemy. On a related note, don't let them get too close.

Second: Save the good weapons for when you need them. Try to use the bare minimum against the first "crab" so that you'll be better prepared for a bigger one (lol...yahtzee). Don't just go around shooting rockets at the little guys.

Lastly: It's all about the mindset. If you're scared then you'll use up ammo quicker. try to imagine them as being weak. Keep out of their range, but don't take them too seriously.

You couldn't find enough ammo in Resident Evil 4?! Oh man then you would hate all the other resident evils before it...(Code Veronica is still my favorite)
I was doing fine up until the last level, where the game became scarier almost to make up for all the action beforehand.

Play with the lights on, and sound off. Play some of your music if you want to. Turn off vibration on your controller. Eliminating as much immersion as possible will help un-set the 'scary' tone of the game. I was creeped out as hell when I played FEAR, but that's because I wanted to be. I only played it when I was alone in the house, or late at night, with the volume up. I could have just run through it really quick and just ignored all the stuff that was trying to creep me out, but I wanted to enjoy the game, not just beat it.

As for ammo conservation, just try to be as accurate as possible, and make sure it's still alive before you shoot it more. (Shoot in small bursts) And be vigilant for ammo, watch what enemies drop and look for places ammo might be hidden. My friend played through RE4 and complained the entire time about not having ammo, because he was just running through everything not searching for anything. So basically, just keep a look out for extra ammo, and don't waste too much. And if at all possible, always carry a side-arm or a melee weapon.

5 Rules

1.Stealth
Stealth creeping around and lining up that perfect shot for max damage.

2.Conserve.
Conserve health and ammo

3. Don't be ammo scared.
Getting ammo scared means you get scared and wildly blast everything in a moment of sheer terror.

4.Plan
Make a plan for each scenario

5.Stealth...again
Seriously I'm not kidding stealthy-ness helps it alerts less monsters while you attack and catches them off-guard. It's literally the best tactic in survival horror.
By pure coincedence, those are the five things I'm worst at.

Everything Danzorz said. You need to find you zen. These games are designed to frenzy people like you. Rise above and fight your fear. It is only a game and cannot hurt you.

Funny, what you experience is what I hope to experience with this game. I've become sorta desensitized to the scare tactics in games and movies, so when I find one that actually makes me jump or creeps me out, I frakin' love it!

When the game comes out, keep us updated on your progress.

You have checkpoints/lives/respawns etc. Its not like the game will combust and shatter when you die the first time and never become operable again.
If i die, i can just do it again, and again, and again.
If things shock you, retreat or take it slow.
