I've owned Fallout New Vegas for a few years, and every year I start a new game with the intent on finishing it only for something else to distract me and make me forget about the game for months at a time. Because of that I've never gotten more than 1/3 of the way through the game (but I know that 1/3 VERY well now).

So I decided that this is the year I finish Fallout New Vegas, but I decided I want to spice it up a bit. The game wasn't exactly a looker when it came out, and it's only gotten uglier with age. I want to fix it up. To that end I want to get some nice high res textures, weather effects, punchier gun effects, better animations, etc.

Unfortunately I haven't kept up with the mod community, and I know that mods are still updated constantly for Fallout New Vegas, so I want to know what the best mods for it currently are, and which ones work best together and don't cause stability issues with each other. I could probably figure this all out myself, but I don't want to spend hours doing research, and I know there's some pretty dedicated Fallout New Vegas fans here who can probably make recommendations for me.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Honestly, just go to the Nexus->Filed-> Top Files and look in the first 2-3 pages, get what you think you'd like.

Personally I just use Project Nevada, a ton of weapon mods (anything by Millenia is basically amazing), and a few quest tweak modes. New Vegas is mostly fine as is, barring bugs (which've mostly been ironed out).

My advice:
Get YUP (Yukichigai's Unofficial Patch)
Script Extender for NV
New Vegas Anti Crash
And the 4GB mod (forgot the exact name)
Stutter Remover (dont use this one myself but it helps with performance).

After that there are too many mods I would recommend, while keeping the experience mostly vanilla.

I'm currently a week into a replay running [a href="https://fallout.gamepedia.com/JSawyer"]J.E. Sawyer's mod[/a], which for those not in the know, is a mod created by the lead developer after the game was released which includes several tweaks and technical fixes (including integrating items and perks from different expansions) and also includes small changes designed to make the game more challenging, such as increasing the XP needed to level up and reducing the level cap, making food/drink/stimpacks rarer and less effective, and lowering the weight limit. Most of these things can be customised to your liking through an in-game menu.

Some of the other mods I have loaded at the moment are;
[a href="https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/62481/?"]Clarity[/a] - Pretties the game up by removing the unnatural tint over everything.
[a href="https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/56625/?"]Uncut Wasteland[/a] - Restores additional NPCS and scenery to make the world a bit fuller.
[a href="https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/63091/?"]Better Pickup Prompt[/a] - Tidies up the HUD when looking at an item (including a spiffy feature that lets you know if picking up an item will make you overencumbered!)
[a href="https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/44757/?"]One HUD[/a] - Allows the HUD to be customised to your desire, moving, hiding or even adding elements.
[a href="https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/46451/?"]Improved LOD Noise Texture[/a] - Stops far away terrain looking crap, especially good for snipers.

Plus a few others that I liked the look of browsing the nexus. Like TheFinish suggested, that's probably your best bet, although be prepared to see a startling amount of nudity-based mods.
