So I've got a fair bit of disposable income and I've decided to look into building a decent gaming desktop. That said, I know jack-shit nothing about computers.

So, can the helpful denizens of the Escapist perhaps help me plan for this, or even just point me in the right direction?

I've got about $1000 I can set aside and have no clue what that could get me.

this [http://www.logicalincrements.com/] is your friend. seriously, it's the best thing ever written for building pcs. it sorts parts into neat little tiers, complete with a description of the power to cost ratio of each level when you hover the mouse over it. parts are selected to work with each other. as for installation, there are tons of good tutorials on youtube. the newegg series is pretty well done for example. if you mastered the square-peg in square-hole game as a child, you will be fine.

<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/index/538-Advice-Forum>The advice forum's over here.

But to answer your question, the Logical Increments guide is amazing. You also might want to visit the <a href=http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc>Build a PC subreddit. <a href=http://www.pcpartpicker.com>Pcpartpicker.com is also a great resource for planning what parts to pick.

Wow, that is quite helpful... to say the least.

Thanks!

Also, wait till Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Whichever one you choose your going to save a LOT of cash, probably a minimum 10% more than you would buying regular sales. That might not seem like much but at $1000 an extra 10% savings can add a year or two to your PC's lifespan, depending on when you want to upgrade.
