I passed most of the last 6 years in the world of MMORPG's, mostly WoW, Lotro and (some argue is not one) Guild Wars. As for single player RPGs I havent been playing any except some indie or flash ones (like Fate or Puzzle Quest).

With the hype around Dragon Age 2 and how much was a disappointment when compared with Dragon Age:Origins, I bought the ultimate edition of the DAO about 1 month ago and started to play it. I quyickly came to understand why so many name it as the best RPG ever. I thijnik at the moment is the best game I played ever. For a start its the first game that, playing in a well built Gaming PC, offered me a gameplay and animations in game that are as if not more breath taking than the cinematics (yes, I am watching you wow, great cinematics and then you slap my face with a 10 years old graphics engine). But there is more, dragon Age offers a great story, so complex that when I compare my first caracther campaign with others I cant even hardly believe we are talking about the same game as the outcomes can be so diferent, as well as the experience.

And so I rediscovered how great single player RPGs can be. My question is, after the great experience with DAO, is it worth to try some older titles, like Baldurs Gate or the latest Elder Scrolls? And what other titles you sugest (bare in mind that sci-fi stuff are not my cup of tea).

The Witcher is a resent RPG that is really good if you like a lot of choices in you game. Plus it will get a sequel soon.

Of older just go to GOG.com and look at there RPG section. They are worth it.

[small]I'm going to keep myself from recommending the JRPG canon, since you probably aren't looking for that.[/small]

Anyway, the older games will have poor graphics. This is unavoidable. I would still recommend Baldur's Gate I & II [small](BG2 is a much better game, but you kind of need the first one to catch the plot)[/small] and Planescape: Torment. They work, they just don't look so pretty anymore. Make sure you get mods to fix the resolution and aspect ratio if necessary.

If you're looking for a WRPG with current-gen graphics, you could try The Witcher. I haven't played it, but people won't shut the fuck up about it so it's probably worth looking into. You could also try Jade Empire, which was made by the same people as DA:O (it is a little older, PC version is from 2007). There's also Neverwinter Nights 2, which plays very similarly to Dragon Age (IIRC), and was made by Obsidian (meaning good writing and INSTALL ALL THE PATCHES).

The Elder Scrolls series, at least from what I've experienced in Oblivion, has a lot more in common with Diablo 2 than with Baldur's Gate. Take that how you will.

Let me say this: EVERYONE should try The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It's easily one of the best RPG's ever!

Also, try Mass Effect 1&2. They might not be RPG's, strictly speaking, but they are damn good, better than Oblivion even.

Not exactly, my only beef with some old Final fantasy games, and the countless pokemon titles my nephews make me play just because they cant get past some parts is the turn based combat.

I would recommend the unmatched Baldur's Gate series as well, alongside with Planescape: Torment. These can be bought on gog.com with a very helpful community.

Mass Effect 1&2 are also amazing, and more current.

Fallout 3 was fun, and to a lesser extent, Fallout: new Vegas (I just don't care much for the ending)

You might also want to try out Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines. A little aged, but with a more... Deux Ex like gameplay. Pretty cool story line and interesting characters. A holdover from before the Dark Age of Twighlight, from which it'll take a decade for vampires to be cool again D:

Also if you're interested in Baldur's Gate, Planescape or one of the Icewind Dale games, check out Sorcerers.net - great modding community.

EDIT: I have to agree with bussinrounds - The backgrounds are truly beautifully done, and the sprites aren't terribly done. Baldur's gate two remains to this day to be my favorite game ever.

I'd say Fallout 3. One of the best games I have ever played.

The atmosphere and AWESOME soundtrack makes the wasteland feel just as it's supposed to after a war. I could walk around for hours, just visiting different towns and talking to people.

It's just one of those games that everyone should try.

I have to recommend Oblvion and practically anyting else in the Elder Scrolls series, Skyrim is coming out soon as well so you won't have the huge wait for it.

i really recommend the classics like Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1&2, Gothic 1&2, Anachronox and Arcanum, and The Witcher (if you need something more recent), so you can see why dragon age is not *that* good. you might also want to look at Icewind Dale if you liked the mechanics of Baldur's Gate.

Jade Empire and Knights of the old Republic were quite fun too, but do not play in the same league as those mentioned above; i.m.h.o. they are still way better than dragon age.
