OK, if this counts as advertising then please, mods, lock this thread. I don't want to get into any trouble and I don't want to break any rules, so as I say, lock it if it's breaking rules, or let me know mods, so I can make any necessary changes.

Basically, as some of you will be aware (due to my spewing about either this or my life at university every other post), I want to go into game development as a career. In particular, though I'm doing a maths course and a programming elective, I want to do Level Design. So a while back, to try and build a decent portfolio to enhance my CV and hopefully get some good attention from game designers when I apply for an internship (during a year out from my university course next year), I downloaded the Game Maker program. Since then I've made all the tutorial games and have tried (and failed) to find a copy of the book 'The Game Maker's Apprentice', a guide to the program. But above all else, I have made one game, entitled Thunderball. The link is right here if anyone is interested.

http://www.yoyogames.com/games/show/49356

Now, over the past year that it's been on the internet, it's been played a grand total of eighteen times. That isn't a problem. It's my first proper game, after all, and since it's been rated 3.2/5 in that time, it's not too shabby. But when I take time to look back at it, I notice that the ten levels I created are glitchy. There are glitches and bugs with the sprites I created for the game, the music isn't exactly up to scratch (though admittedly I did kind of steal the music from OCRemix.org, despite making sure to credit the composers in the Help page). Overall, it's the first version of the game and it isn't much good.

So what I want to do is change it. During the year I never got round to deleting the original source files and I still have them even now. I want to update the game and rerelease it, and crate new levels. I want to expand the game. I want to make it a lot better than it is and try to get more interest, see if I can perhaps make a name for myself as a developer on the internet. And so I need testers. That's where you all come in.

My request is simple. Anyone who clicks the link above and plays the game, let me know what you think. Either post it here or PM me, or email me (my email address is on my profile). If you want me to send you a copy of the game itself, the actual application, then PM me with your email address so I can send it to you. I want opinions, and I want ideas on how I can improve the game, and ideas for levels, extra features, and so on. Also, I want people who I can add to a list here on this opening post to act as official Beta Testers who will be credited in the new version who can go through the game over and over again making sure that any and all bugs are found, and then ironed out in the updated version. If you're interested then please help me out here, and cookies and happiness and gumdrop smiles will be promised for all :D.

I will be glad to help as much as I can. I assume it would be much easier if I had the application for the game so feel free to send it to me, I'll follow this up with a PM as well.

While I can't really help you out with testing your game, I do have questions concerning Game Maker. Is it a decent system to use, and to start game creation with? Does it use any popular/industry standard programming languages or does it use its own? If it has it's own, is it easy to learn/use?

Thanks.

I just saw "GAME TESTERS WANTED" of course, I would be more than happy to test your game.

Ugh. Can't you show this on your own site or something? I can't even play without installing a plugin.

Well, he posted it on here because there's a lot of people on this site.
And he did say "sorry if this counts as advertising" or something along those lines.

It's quite easy to use, much better than the likes of Flash or Adventure Game Studios for your first games. It uses a drag and drop interface to create levels and so on, while events and such are pre programmed and you simply choose from lists what you want things to do, like macros, though by combining commands you can create extremely complex games and actions. It's very popular, and it does use it's own programming language to create scripts for more complex games, though the language is easy to learn as it's based mainly on C++, I believe. However, it isn't necessary to know how to program to make games with Game Maker. If you want to download it it's free, though by paying a small fee you can buy the 'Pro' edition which has many more features, from http://www.yoyogames.com/

Not sure about that, I have very little experiences with Mac, though it may be because I created the game on Windows. If you can access the site then you should be able to play it with no problems, otherwise I have no idea what to do.

And to everyone complaining that they can't access the game on the website, then I can honestly say that I don't know what the problem is. Every time anyone else has accessed games on that site when I've spoken to them, there have been no problems, and I've never had any problems myself with the game file. So it's probably a fault with the site itself. Apologies in any case.

Level 3, the balls got 'stuck' on the wall. Play end.

First: If the paddles are meant to be contigious (ie: one whole) then draw them as such.

if they're not, the balls failed to travel through the 'holes' in the paddles every time.

Second: Add some animation or sprites or something. Have the stars twinkle, or the Portal's swirl or somesuch, keep it visually interesting.

Also: The music was enjoyable.. but not 100% matched to the game style or story

Otherwise, simple but fun

I know what you mean on Level 3, I've had it happen when I've played it too, and it's on other levels too. That's the key thing I need to change, and it's completely down to the wall sprites, so I really need to make some major changes to either the sprites or the level design.

As for animation, the background is simply a screen I did in MS Paint and added it as the background of every level. I guess I could change it to make it more interesting as you get further through the game, using different backgrounds in a similar style to the Gummi Ship levels in Kingdom Hearts as you progress in the game...

The balls weren't meant to travel through the paddles, the paddles are continuous. However, since I did them as being black and dark blue your mistake is easy to make, so I reckon a complete change in sprite design will be needed there. And maybe I should make the edges smoother, stop the ball from getting stuck on the sprites in later levels...

Finally, the music was taken from the 'Voices Of The Lifestream' album on OCRemix.org, as they were some of my favourite songs from the album and I felt they fitted the mood quite well. If possible though, for the new version I'll try and get someone else in to do original music, or make some of my own.

Thanks for the feedback, by the way, I'll definitely take all those points into account :)

[HEADING=1]NOTICE:[/HEADING]

If anybody would like to request a copy of the game itself (Version 1.0) sent to them by email, then I'm really sorry, but because my email accounts are screwing around with me and not letting me send attachments then you'll have to wait a while. Let me know anyway and I will endeavour to send a copy to anyone who requests one as soon as humanly possible.

Okay, normally I hate to do this. However, I really do need more feedback on the game at Yoyogames before I can start to rectify the problems and get to work on version 2. So, although I hate doing this...

BUMP!!!!!
