Since I figure the Escapist has a pretty tech-savvy community - and because I don't know any other technology-related communities - I'd like to pose a problem for you to help me with.

I got a new ipod recently and it's one of those newer ones that has video on it, only I have absolutely no idea how to go about ripping a DVD and then converting it to itunes. I've tried looking on the web, but I don't understand any of the jargon that's being thrown around.

I really have no idea how to go about any of this - other than how to insert and eject a disc into my laptop - so any help would be greatly appreciated. I also want to know how to go about ripping TV episodes as well as feature films if there's a difference between the two.

When I was looking at the web, I saw a few things that looked a little fishy, so I understand if there's some legal problems with what I want to do with my ipod and my movies. If there is a problem, I'm sorry for posting this thread but it's a subject that I'm totally ignorant of.

As far as the legality of it goes, if you do own the DVD you can make copies for yourself (NOT for other peoples though) I'm not sure on TV stuff but since it's usually broadcast over "free" air-TV i guess it's fine ?

Anyways on to the technical side of things :

You need a DVD ripper software, the software that'll turn the peculiar DVD architecture into something a regular video player (like the one on your ipod) will understand.I use DVD decrypter (rips the files off the DVD) and AutoGK (puts all the files into a single video files readable on a video player)

It's relatively easy to use theses tools if you read a bit of the documentation that comes with it, once done, your dvd will be turned into a single video file, easily readable (be aware that you rip only 1 audio track(language))

As far as TV goes you'll need a TV-in on your computer, if you're using a laptop you most likely don't have one in it and would need to buy an external TV-tuner (avermedia makes decent ones, reasonably-priced too http://www.avermedia-usa.com/ )

As i said before though, if you don't actually own the dvd's (renting them or whatnot) you're effectively pirating them.
