I've almost completed the Thieve's Guild quests, but on the final one where you need to steal the Elder Scroll, the Blind Monks found me out and I couldn't get the scroll. When I tried to get back in the door was locked and I don't have the key, and no-one I pickpocket has it either. I can't talk to the Gray Fox to restart the quest and have no save files before the quest began. I also can't do anything else with the quest, since the game won't let me go back and do it again. Is there a way around this to get the scroll again or is that it? (I also lost the boots of Springheel Jack while escaping from the monks).

You could've just killed the monks in the first place?
And to be fair, not saving beforehand was a bit silly.

I did but then there was no way to get the scroll and the guards chased me away from the room. I can't get back in now.

how did you lose the boots man? you need those to survive the fall when you jump down the chimney shoot to escape. Sorry man, it sounds like your hosed. The last couple stages of the thieves guild can be really glitchy, I'd recommend having a fallback save point before you start.

The thieves Guild questline was one of the most frustrating gaming experiences I've ever had. It glitched on me TWICE, in that you could not even activate the last mission.

I hate to say it but I believe you have been royally screwed by one of Oblivion's many bugs...

Right, well sadly I have the Xbox 360 version so I guess I'll just have to forget about it...

The boots aren't meant to survive the fall.

EDIT: TheNecroSwanson, how did you get to level 80? Cheats?

Makes me glad I never got that far with the Thieves' Guild quest. I mean, sneaking around is nice in small doses, but eventually, I just want to pull out the sword and make a few rag dolls.

Come to think of it, I didn't have one glitch with Oblivion, except for some minor clipping and sound effects issues. And the only problem I had with Fallout 3 was this one time when a Deathclaw was running at me, then all of a sudden it just rocketed 60 feet up into the air and disappeared.

Gotta hand it to Bethesda. For games this enormous and complex, they're surprisingly good about making them run smoothly. Wonder who let their kid type the code for the Thieves' Guild missions, though.

I forgot to equip the stupid boots but the fall just injured my Orc, he didn't die.

Guess Orcs are just tough mofos.

Hmmm, I thought the acrobatic boost from the boots was mainly to lessen the damage from the fall... I haven't played in a while though so I might be missing something.

Anyway, its too bad, of all the guilds, the thief's quest line had the coolest ending in my opinion. certainly better than the major letdowns from the mages or fighters guilds. dark brotherhood was pretty cool i guess.

Looking at the comments I've decided I may as well just start the game again. Apart from the Thieve's Guild I wasn't actually that far through, I haven't done anything storywise yet, except for Kvatch (I'm ready to go but haven't gone there yet), and a couple of Dark Brotherhood missions. I can just restart from scratch and I won't be losing anything really, so that's probably the best way to go. Mainly since I wanted to get all the achievements for Xbox 360 for the game (I'm a bit obsessed, I played through Assassin's Creed again because I missed only ONE achievement, so that should tell you how obsessed I am with them...).
