Dogs have muscles. Keeping them confined to a tiny area in which they can barely turn around is disgusting. If you have no choice but to leave your dog in a tiny crate for practically an entire day you shouldn't have a dog to begin with. If you don't want it running around your house and you don't have a yard, then you have no business getting a dog.dmase said:Your telling me you have never heard of crate training? I'm pretty sure it is the most common and preferred method to training dogs.

Dogs aren't people and have to conform to people's schedule, having them spend 8 to 9 hours in a crate is preferable to them tearing up the furniture to the anxiety of being left alone or going to the bathroom around the house like the OP. Because at that point people start getting rid of their dogs.
I've never heard of anyone training their dog like that. The way me and my friends trained our dogs was simply to take them outside after their meal, wait until they do their business and praise them when they do. If you catch them about to go inside you say "no" and immediately take them outside, where you praise them once they do their business. Notice how nowhere in this process is there a need to keep an animal confined in cramped conditions for prolonged periods of time.
