I'm currently working on a 30 page paper for a grad course and I would like some help with it. I'm not asking for for anyone to write it or even edit it. Rather I could use some links to media related family violence (like the Halo killer). My paper is on the mass media and family violence and I'm currently trying to finish up my research and I need some examples. I thought the best place to come would be here (outside of the normal research avenues).

Not to sound harsh, but the gaming world kinda hates stories where gaming is linked to real-life death, no matter how obvious, so I'm not sure whether or not this thread will take off...
Personally, I can't help you, but I hope other people can.

If I were you, I'd be writing AGAINST games causing the violence, rather than for. Get some records of Non-game-related murders, then some Hand-eye-co-ordination reports that say that gaming's good, staple them together and BANG.

Some kid called Warren LeBlanc [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Leblanc] murdered his former friend and the blame was partly placed on his obsession with Manhunt. Apparently, it was later found that he didn't possess the game. BBC news link [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/leicestershire/3934277.stm]

The Columbine massacre is probably the most well-known one, apparently those dudes were really into Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. You can probably find links about that.

Wikipedia link about video game controversies [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_controversy], might be helpful?

If you want some funny bedtime reading, check this out [http://www.mediawatch.com/wordpress/?p=13]. Haven't seen if it has anything useful, but whatevs

The paper isn't so much about gaming being bad or the cause of family violence as it is about the relation between mass media (which does include video games) and family violence. It's not out to prove or disapprove allegations one way or another, but rather to draw any (negative or positive) correlations. I've been a gamer for a very long time myself and I can see it going both ways. It's easy for most of us to get into arms about this kinda thing because most of us haven't done anything bad and are more or less harmless to the outside world. However, that's not saying that it can't or doesn't have a negative effect on some people and sometimes it's just a latent effect (like desensitization to violence). I'm just as curious to see what's out there as anyone else.
