Hello there Escapists!
My mate and I are having a bit of trouble installing a new OS on his laptop.
We recently just a RAM upgrade and a new Hard-Drive and they have installed fine.
Now, we are on our way to installing a new OS (Vista) using the the computer to boot from CD/DVD drive and going on from there.
We tried once and it loaded, and crashed out by the part where we enter the serial number.
So, we tried again and now it refuses to read the disc at all.

Yes, I have searched the net for advice and no nothing useful has come up.

Anyone else had a problem like this?
Anyone that can help at all?

Cheers.

How much RAM have you now got in there? There's issues with early versions of Vista (even 64bit) that won't install on systems with 4GB of memory or more, so if you have an early disc (ie no SP integration) it will have the problem.

Take some memory out until you have under 4GB, install Vista, run all the updates to get the patch that fixes it and then install the rest of the memory.

Also, you're not trying to install a 32bit OS on a system with more than 4GB of memory (including the memory on the GFX card) are you?

Only 2Gb of ram in there.
It's not really an issue with Vista installing, more of an issue of the OS disc refusing to be read, even though it already has been read once.

Thanks for the responce!

Maybe also make sure the rest of the laptop can handle vista for example that the graphics card is at least DX9 compatible
Edit:just saw the reply
have you made sure you are set to boot from disk first?

Yeah, I set it to boot from disk in the BIOS setup and in the Boot menu just to make sure!
Just not picking up the disc now for no reason I can see.

Well, you had the machine open, so perhaps you got some dirt on the lens? Either that or ROM drive is on it's way out, as that sounds similar to my mostly dead drive.

is the ram the same type of ram? ie same maker and exact same time?

tho knowing the error that it gives would be handy as well

also have you tried a different disc? is there scratches on the disc itself?
