My laptop won't run. Typing from an alternate thankfully, but basically, last night, fine, no problems at all. This morning, press power button, fan whirrs to life as normal, as does disc drive.. and the screen is black. No bios, no Dell logo, no OS startup.

It's a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Windows 7 and 2 gigs of RAM. I've tried removing battery, then pressing power, then replacing battery and cable, same result. It's not the screen because my dual monitor has nothing too. Help, because I really can't afford a new laptop, or even to do the expensive rates Dell want.

Unfortunately if you do not get a bios screen, that is usually a sign of a serious problem.

Remove and reseat the RAM. On most dell machines, the ram is underneath a cover on the bottom of the laptop. A standard Phillips #0 screwdriver will suffice. Remove the memory, and reseat it back in the machine and test. Even a small amount of wiggle in the memory can cause problems.

If it doesn't give any any message it all, it has got to be worse than a RAM problem.

It could be that the on-board video is fried, in which case you're out of luck.

With a laptop, that's pretty much all I can tell you.
