Help With CS 1.6.......

Yes I know its a bit outdated, but its one of the few games my current crappy computer will run.

Anyway I have two problems:

1.Almost every time I try to connect to a server, It takes me to this pop up that shows various stats (People Playing, Latency, ETC.), and the latency goes from whatever it was(usually from 30-50), goes to 2000, and says "Server Not Responding" Maybe it has something to do with my noobishness with PC gaming in general which leads me to my second problem.

2.I suck at CS, or really all PC shooters in general. I usually die too quickly to react to the enemy. Even though I've gotten better since I bought it, I still only manage an average of 1 kill every 2-3 deaths. Do you guys have any tips on how to get better?

Well I can help with the second problem...

Look everywhere. Check the corners of every room quickly as you enter. Be very cautious until you get the hang of the game.

Secondly, try practicing reflex shooting. Pick a random object in the level, and just shoot at it. Run by and try to hit it or jump, turn around and shoot at it, etc. It really helps, because most of your encounters with the enemy will last a whole two seconds on average. You need to be able to shoot accurately and quickly at something that just appeared. Also try memorizing head height. If you always know what height their head will be at, you can shoot at it more promptly.

*shrugs* I've never really played counterstrike, so i'd assume it has the same stuff as half-life. if so, then yeah, traps are your friends.

No traps. Just guns, nades, and body armor.

in that case, grenade the shiz-nit out of every room before you walk in, if the room's small. if it's a big room, you'll just draw unwanted attention.

But grenades are expensive, and I usually end up sucking so bad that I cant afford anything except my primary weapon, some ammo, and body armor.

alright, different approach: what's your primary weapon?

depends on what I can afford.
On CTs i usually variate from either the FAMAS or M4 carbine.
On terrorists usually the Galil or Ak47.
Sometimes I use the MP5 too(when I'm near flat broke) but that's available for both sides.
