As for discussion value what's your favourite mod and what's the best creation you've seen?

EDIT: ok turns out I have no idea what i'm doing, if anyone fancys helping me i'll give you a cookie (as long as you have minecraft haha)

Alright, firstly, a few things you have to know:
You \will need something that can open Rar files, I recommend 7-Zip.
Secondly, most mods require, to my knowledge, a modloader, most usually his one [http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/75440-v152-risugamis-mods-updated/].
After that, go into %appdata%, open the Minecraft folder, and locate the bin folder, hen o/pen Minecraft.Jar using 7-zip, then drag in the files stated.
h, DELETE THE META-INF FOLDER, IT \WILL RESULT IN A BLACK SCREEN!
Also, not all mods are compatible, so be aware of hat. Make sure minecraft is closed, and he mod your using are u/p-to-date.

Also, some mod/pack nowadays come \with custom installers.
However, his is for \windows 7, so this might not apply for \windows 8...

You could also just use MultiMC as a launch program. see: http://forkk.net/MultiMC4.html You create an 'instance' and can easily add and remove mods to that instance of minecraft just by right clicking on it.

Another super easy launcher is the FTB (feed the beast) launcher which has a bunch of pre-made mod packs which are guaranteed to work together without fiddling with configs or id conflicts. You can launch with one button. (And if you don't like a specific mod included in a pack it's easy to remove it.) That's at http://feed-the-beast.com/

Yeah just follow wackymon's post, most of the minor mods that feature one or two new mobs or a unique world generation use that format. Back your files up, though. Copy them, paste them to your desktop, rename them "unmodded MC" or some junk. If your mods get screwy or you don't want to play modded anymore, rename the files back to their original names and put them back.

If there's nothing on your PC that you want to keep, then you don't have to back anything up. I never do.

Some mods feature their own individual launchers, so it's really foolproof how to use: run the .exe, enter your account login (shit is safe, trust me), and the game's right there. Since it is its own launcher, you never have to worry about vanilla Minecraft using the wrong version, or not being compatible with multiplayer, or losing your files.

The biggest mod, by far, is the Technic Pack, which has the aforementioned launcher. You can run about ten different overhaul mods for Minecraft from the launcher, the most popular packs being Tekkit and Voltz (of Yogscast fame). They are a bit complex, but they expand the game a lot further past getting lucky with diamonds in the first twenty minutes and not getting anything better.

I also like Better Than Wolves, but to my knowledge it hasn't been updated in forever.

I'm not the only person on earth who uses 7zip 0.0.

OP: Pretty much the guy I quoted.
