As my collection of video games grows and shifts, new games come in, old ones go out, and I lend a few out to friends, I'm finding it increasingly hard to keep track of my collection.

When it comes to DVD's, I have an excellent online organizer that allows me to keep track of everything, but I've yet to come across something similar (free, obviously) for gaming.

Can anyone offer any help or suggestions?

Put them all in a file in alphabetical order?

Or is there some kind of hidden art to this that I don't understand?

I had the same problem with my DVDs.
I make a spreadsheet listing them all, and make areas for noting when people borrowed them, who that person is, and when they borrowed them. Working great so far! If you don't have MS Office, get Open Office. Works just as good.

You mean something that records what games you happen to own? Go for Raptr. It automatically detects what you have installed onto your computer. If you link your Steam and Xbox and PS3 account it records that too, along side achievements. That and you can manually add the games you have.

You could write a list in a word document or something and then put notations if you lend them to someone. That's simple.

Edit: Effectively ninja'd.

Does it have a functionality for console games as well?

What I am looking for is something akin to DVDAfficionado, a sort of database that allows you to organize your collection.

You could buy one of those vending machines for dvds and use it for yourself
albeit not the least expensive way to keep track

Yeah as long as you have it connected to your profile it will automatically update it. Wait here's an example. My profile: http://raptr.com/TheInfinite

That seems to be exactly the kind of thing I've been looking for.

Many thanks for the suggestion, I think that's what I'm going with.

Hey no problem I'm glad to help. Though you will also need to install the Raptr Client. Its like IM, nothing major just keep it running in background. Like xFire. But hey glad it's what you are looking for, just give it a day or so to update everything.

That Raptr program looks neat. Gives me a good idea for a small app I could write during down time at my job and learn something at the same time. Good thread all around.

I take 'em all out of their boxes, then take the manual out, then throw it all in a big pile in the middle of my floor. I've been called many things, but never organised.
