Help with resident evil 4

So here is the story:
Lately I have been trying to play older games to see what older gamers are talking about (if I'm not playing Brutal Legend). This weeks game was resident evil 4.

Things have been going great, with only one time that I had to look up what to do, but I couldn't find anything. The things is that I know what to do, but for the life of me, I cannot do it. Here is what one walk-through said:

"Keep Ashley behind you at all times. As soon as the giant appears, take aim with your pistol and look towards the western wall (should be to your left). At the top of the canyon wall is a large boulder precariously resting atop a weak wooden structure. Pop just one bullet into the wood and the boulder will come crashing down, giving you a valuable obstacle to distract the ogre. As soon as the boulder falls, turn around and run towards the gate ahead. The door is locked up, though you can break through the locks with a pistol shot to each of them (kicking them in will work, but it's too slow)."

This is what happens: I shot the wood and run to the door, but Ashley keeps getting killed before I can get it open, or the rock doesn't fall and I end up taking a really long nap.

I'm not asking for another walk-through, I asking if you guys can help me. I'm I doing something I am doing wrong, if there is a way around this or there is a secret to killing this baster.

EDIT: I'm playing the PS2 version.

EDIT2: Thanks everyone for your help, I finialy got past them. I took the left rout and only had to to it twice because the first time trying the rout, I did see the second chainsaw coming.

I prefer the alternate path for the first playthrough (throw the lever to the left, opening the left gate.) It gives you a more typical battle, and Ashley the Useless has plenty of safe places to hide to keep her dumb ass out of the way.

You will have to deal with The Bella Sisters and their chainsaws, but you can do that with a shotgun and a few grenades. As soon as they drop into the area, pick up a ladder, get out of the pit that that battle starts in and pick a good place to face them. It may take once or twice to find a good way to fight them, but it beats going after the Gigante in that tiny area. Good luck, and hope this helped.

2. Turn around, wait until he's under the bolder and shoot the wood, boulder damages him

3. Use your TMP on him

4. Dart through his legs if you can, Ashley should be fine

5. If Ashley gets picked up shoot El Giante's hand with the tmp and he'll let her go

Shouldn't be too hard if you're on normal mode.

Good idea, but I don't have a tmp.
I give it a shot anyways.

I have a shotgun with 12 shots and a red9 with 56 shots. Oh and a rife with a scope with 3 shots left. No grenades or herbs.

How do you not have a TMP?

Buy one from The Merchant "Heh heh heh."

If you don't have the moolah sell something. El Giante should always be fought with a TMP, at least in that area.

I don't have any money or anything to sell because I spent it on getting the red9.

here's what i did:
1 - Save an RPG
2 - Aim
3 - fire
4 - casually walk through to the gate.

you should probably save an RPG for those 'special' occasions.

Better to choose the close combat-ish path instead or if you're feeling good about yourself take the gigante path and shoot him in the head with the red9 if he gets ashley.
