So my Xbox was just taken for the umpteenth time because my dear mother heard me talking to my friends on XBL late tonight. Before I would let her take it and wait it out, this time I am intent on remedying the situation. There is a vent right over my door, it has shutters that are always closed and yet the sound carries. I don't want to tear apart any walls or anything big like that. Any suggestions?

Simple suggestion: Your obviously young, so try to think practically and do what mummy says.

Almost-18 young. She couldn't care less if I played until noon the next day, she just doesn't want to hear it.

Mothers? Logical and reasonable? Does that happen? Seriously, I just want to talk to my clan without bothering anyone. I can probably do it very cheaply, (stuffing t-shirt in the vent?) I just want to know if anyone else has found a highly effective way to soundproof.

You'd be better off asking someone at a tool/construction shop than on here. Maybe even Wikihow.

But if you're not worried about ever using the vent again, then filling it with some sort of soundproof foam will probably sort things out.

Buy a better headset, you shouldn't have to speak very loudly. Can you buy quality headsets for consoles? I have a set of headphones with a mic for my PC and I don't have to speak much louder than a whisper for others to hear it.

Hang a heavy blanket over the doorway it will cut the sound a bit.

Or, you could talk quieter. Just ask your friends or clan to keep unnecessary chatter to a minimum, and ask them to keep their voices down. Then turn the Tv down.

That, or you can chloroform your mother every night.
