Hi Escapists, if I can I'd like to borrow about 15 minutes of your time.
I'm currently doing a Games Design course at university, and part of my assignment at the moment is to create the GUI system for a hypothetical Civil War (the English Civil War, Cavaliers vs Roundheads) RTS game, aimed at teenage gamers, for the Nintendo DS. I've completed the first prototype, and I'd really appreciate any feedback you could give, regarding how easy it is to use and so on.
Notes: Currently the vast majority of the artwork is nothing more than placeholders, and there is no sound. Some of the in-game functionality is not complete, as it is the menu system that is assessed. The mouse replaces the stylus.
The prototype can be found HERE [http://www.newmedia.artdesignhull.ac.uk/jcarter/flash-video/gui-mockup2.html] (Requires Flash Player 9 or above, if you are using a large resolution you may need to zoom in slightly (ideally, each 'screen' should be around 6.2cm/2.5 inches across))
Any feedback is appreciated, and please don't hesitate to be brutally honest.
If you have the time, please follow these few tasks, and make notes of any issues you have.
Begin a new campaign game
Check the stats of the selected unit (Parliamentarian Cavalry)
Quit and return to the main menu
Load a saved campaign game
Change the difficulty, brightness or volume settings in the options menu, and save these changes.
Return to the options and reset these settings.
Begin the 'Battle of Edgehill' scenario in Free Play
If you wish, try and break the game
Now, could you please answer these questions?
How old are you? (If you do not wish to put your exact age, simply state if you are a teenager. Feedback from any age group is welcome)
How easy to navigate was the menu system?
Do you have any suggestions to improve the system?
What has the system done right?
What has the system done wrong?
Any other comments:
Thanks for your time, any feedback you give is greatly appreciated, and will help towards improving the next version of the prototype.
EDIT: Modified prototype linked
