ok, so at what point so you think an anime or fan art goes from being ecchi to hentai?

Don't you mean, Ecchi to Hentai?
At any rate, I'd say when actual sexual activitiesare depicted that's when it becomes hentai.

Welcome to the Escapist, on the by.

I'd say that it's probably either nudity or direct *intentional* sex organ contact. The latter is because something could be considered "hentai" if it's under clothes.

It's basically the difference between "racy" and "porn".

but would depicting nudity also make it hentai?
From what I understand nudity is still considered more ecchi, rather than hentai. Could be wrong though.

I don't think so, if it's just nudity and there's no sex (even if it's meant to be sexual) I don't think it breaks the ecchi barrier.

hahaah thank's for the welcome,
joined ages ago but never got around to coming to the website =3
that's what many would say,
but say an anime wants to convey sex, and it show's say, two characters naked under a blanket, nothing shown just obvious. would that be a hentai moment?

When it depicts actual sex. One could also argue that it's when full anatomical detail (especially of genitals) is drawn.

For an example, see Yuria 100 Shiki (seriously, do so, it's hilarious). Anything more explicit than that is hentai.

Not necessarily. It's rare, but there are non-H artists who leave them in when depicting upper-body nudity (I'm thinking Ai Yori Aoshi in particular).

Not unless it shows exactly what they did to get to that moment.

Good point, Nodame Cantabile has that exact moment and I would never in a million years call that hentai. As well, Code Geass had nudity and it not considered to be anywhere near hentai or ecchi.

I think you must draw the line at copulation.

Technically, Ecchi = H = Hentai.

But since western nerds have made up new meanings for the words... well, I guess you can draw the line at the same place you do to tell simple nudity and porn apart.

I always thought "Ecchi" included graphic sexual depictions of ordinary vanilla sex, and "Hentai" referred to the more uncommon and fetishistic stuff?

Seems like it's similar to the difference between softcore material and hardcore pornographic depictions instead.

Hentai is mainly concerned with sex and contains a lot of it, whether it be vanilla or fetish.

Ecchi can contain the whole skimpy outfit thing or even sexualised nudity and possibly implied sex without every showing it. Again, while hentai is concerned with sex, Ecchi often isn't. There are many anime and manga which contain ecchi that are not concerned with sex. For example; Steel Angel Kurumi has a quite a few ecchi scenes, yet it also has a plot and storyline separate from this. (Saving the future world from demons).

Aw hell no.
Hentai is sex, like sex-sex, the one where... you know.
Ecchi is just teasing. Side-boob here, panties there, exaggerated body features there... it doesn't have to feature actual sex, though there's some ridiculous ones like Seikon no Qwaser which cross over into "i can't believe it's not hentai" territory.
So I've found out. I guess the whole "Hentai" roughly meaning "Perverted" (I think) threw me off.

I distinctly remember chuckling at Seikon no Qwasers plot description and not watching it. Seemed a pretty gratuitous and inelegantly obvious excuse for indulging in that particular fetish.

To me, ecchi is when nudity is used for comical effects, or for just a bit of fanservice. Hentai is when that goes to actual sexual experience.

yeah the whole hentai means pervert thing threw me off to, annoying how all these Japanese words have a meaning that's similar to its actual meaning when used in English content
