Tryhard. Now there's a strange insult if I've ever heard one. Since when was trying hard a bad thing? However, it seems to be a little more complex than that. Specifically, when you call someone a 'tryhard,' it usually means that they try a little too hard. That they forgo fun in pursuit of a game, that they value getting ahead more than their own entertainment. And that's fair, I suppose - to a point. But here's the kicker: Recently, I was on a forum for Dark Souls, and they were all bitching about tryhards too! Now, I don't know if you've ever played Dark Souls, but I can point to at least five specific places where you won't be having fun. But if you've gotten to the end, you must have powered through them by - all together now - trying hard.

What, exactly, is so bad about tryhards that they get ostracized? Am I a tryhard just because I got past the archers in Anor Londo, even though at that point I was gritting my teeth so hard they liquefied? There used to be a time when hard work was glorified, not shunned.

But here's the kicker: The people who were complaining about tryhards were doing so because they fought them in multiplayer. Oh, so now I see. What are they being accused of doing? What are they 'trying hard' to do? Win? An entire widespread insult can't solely be based on the bitterness of losers, can it?

Now, to be fair, this isn't entirely groundless. There are actually people who have long since stopped enjoying games and simply try to beat everyone else simply because they have no life. However, these people exist to the same degree as the people who masturbate with handfuls of mayonnaise; namely, that there's about 4 or 5 of them in the world, and you, personally, have never met them. So can we give it a rest? Because if you can't try hard in Dark Souls, and you can't have an easy mode, what the hell is Dark Souls 2 supposed to look like?

Again? Didn't we just have a tryhard thread like two days ago? Is this a result of that Critical Miss cartoon? Why is everyone bricking their pants about such a twee little insult all of a sudden?

You want to know why people are calling you a tryhard? Because of this. Because it's upsetting you. That's the whole point. Who gets upset about tryhard?

"You are trying hard."
"Thanks!"

It's deja vu all over again; http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.838736-One-gaming-related-insult-I-cannot-stand

Personally, I see this as when people have differing views on what 'fun' is.

For example, Bill and Bob sit around the kitchen table and play MtG. They make decks out of the cards they have that look pretty. Then, Bob goes to a FNM, pre-release, etc., gets trounced, then starts looking into competitive play. Now, when Bill and Bob play around the kitchen table, Bill is still playing with their deck of pretty cards, while Bob is trying to playtest his recent build. Bill loses every game, Bob's not gathering any useful information about his deck. Neither is having any fun, Bill thinks Bob is a tryhard and Bob thinks Bill is a noob.

I think there are disparate views on who is considered a tryhard. I for one think that a skilled player who puts all of his effort into winning shouldn't be labeled a tryhard. If I get my ass stomped in Dark Souls by a player who is just plain better than I am, then awesome, good for that player. I reserve the tryhard insult for bad players who try to win at all costs. Usually they use OP tactics, because they can't win any other way. Since we are on the subject of Dark Souls, I would consider players who spam Wrath of the Gods, Dark Bead, Pursuers [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aSCbCUqj64], or use the Giant Dad [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyA8odjCzZ4] setup to be tryhards.

I've considered it an extension of anti-intellectualism. People hold resentment to those that remind them they aren't doing their best. They don't want to, and don't feel a problem with it, but they hate the reminder that others are doing more with their free time, yet don't consider it "not having fun."

We ARE talking about an insult that exists almost solely in the realm of multiplayer gaming, right? Can anyone really be said to be "doing more with their free time"? Unless the purported tryhard is also learning guitar or getting their doctorate while going blue trying to win a round of Words With Friends or whatever else it is they're playing?
