Hey anime fans, is the Dragon Ball series actually revered as a good anime?

Allow me to word this better, I've hardly watched any anime. I've seen Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Pokemon, Soul Eater, and Beyblade.

Dragon Ball Z has the fondest memories for me, and is my favorite childhood show.

Now, I'm sure many of you have watched many animes, and I was wondering, is the DB series really regarded as good among you knowledgeable peeps? I know many people like it, and nostalgia plays a large factor, but how is it thought of amongst the anime community?

Dragonball Z is one of those shows that's so bad, it's good :D

It's the Devil May Cry of anime.

I love it.

Granted it has moments of silliness and WTF moments, it's still pretty awesome.

Also, it gave us the abridged version of DBZ, so what's not to love about it? :D

Ten year-old me loved it so you know it's gotta be good.
I haven't actually watched it since, apart from the Abridged series though so I couldn't tell you. I stopped following it shortly after the Cell saga, I'm not sure why. I think my Mom got rid of Cartoon Network because I was watching it too much.

Some people swear by it. I always found it annoying that some fights would take up so many episodes but that is pretty much a convention with anime and you get used to it. I recommend "marathoning" it.

In what sense? I certainly wouldn't hold "Z" era dragonball up as any paragon of storytelling or pacing, for instance. That said, it is easily one of the most successful manga/anime in history, and is listed by many recent shonen mangaka as a major source of inspiration for their respective series, and it is often credited as increasing the influence of the medium outside of Japan, so its impact is unquestionable.

Besides, it's still fun enough to watch.

DBZ is good... in theory... but is badly in need of an editor.
If you've seen Yatzhee's review of the Metal Gear Solid, you know what I mean.

I've heard the original DB series and DBGT are better, but I can't verify that.

Well Dragon Ball is considered a genuinely good anime and one of the most influential. Dragon Ball Z however jumped the shark but in a good way. It's just ridiculous :D

I actually really think the Abridged series is the best way to watch the series :D

Well i still like it (watched the Kai) but the older you get the more you notice how ridiculous it is and it also feels like they didn't know where they were going to when they started DBZ. But it doesn't mean it ain't good, it's just "special" and i love it for it.

I love DBZ yes it is ridiculous, OTT and drags out it's fights with them either Goku laying on the ground for 5 episodes after taking a powerful attack or the characters spending 2 episodes talking trash to each other during fights and i love every minute of it, it's the show that got me into anime (apart from Tenchi Muyo)

I don't really think so, but then again I didn't watch much of it.

It didn't really seem to do anything, except be really popular. I mean, for comparison, I hear all the time about how memorable Optimus Prime's death was, even though I never watched the show. With Dragon Ball it feels like people like the show, but not really any particular parts.

I'm a moderate anime fan so I'm not exactly some oracle of the medium, but I reckon it's pretty well regarded. Not as among the absolute best out there, but it's a favourite of a lot of people. It has a kind of campy and bombastic appeal that I think a lot of people can appreciate. It's not supposed to be taken seriously, and the show knows it. Taken in that view I think it's pretty well regarded. I wouldn't say it's "so bad it's good" though. It's silly and fun, has a lot of cool action, and is very nostalgic. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I love Goku's character in the Abridged series. He's so delightfully retarded. Well, there's a sentence I never thought I'd type.

Where did you hear that GT was better?

I mean I like GT, but even I know it's widely regarded as not as good.

Well, okay, maybe "has better pacing" or something. Like I said, I haven't seen it, so I can't judge. Also, it doesn't star Vegeta, which of course makes it significantly less cool.

Congratulations, you managed to fit both an insult and a compliment into one phrase :s

Does the phrase "are they still on Namek" mean anything to you? :p

(Jokes aside, I do view the end of the Namek arc and the Cell Saga to be the high points of Z)
