Hey anime fans, is the Dragon Ball series actually revered as a good anime?

I don't see why the Buu saga gets such bad press, I mean yeah it started off pretty shitty with the whole high school and great Saiyaman thing, but it really picks up when they arrive at the World Tournament, and shit hits the fan when Babidi arrives.

I love Goku's character in the Abridged series. He's so delightfully retarded. Well, there's a sentence I never thought I'd type.

Dragonball and DBZ has its moments, but by this time we MST3Kify it. I was in a room with Kent Williams (VA for Dr. Gero and others) as Vegeta was going Super Saiyan on the first androids (in that saga, of course), and I made the comment from Yu Yu Hakusho "Karasu's hair has just change to gold, which now means he's stronger and more popular", which was essentially what Koto said that episode. He laughed like hell.

Most people don't like GT, including some trouble on the DBZ creator front.

It's alright if you don't take it too seriously, but it is sort of the spawn of most of the anime cliches that people tend to cling on to when regarding anime.

But much like Naruto or Bleach, it's mostly popular with shounen fans, mild to moderate anime fans, and nostalgia nuts. If you look at if from a critical stand point It doesn't measure up very well.

Well, I guess it's "good" in the same way a movie like Independence Day or a Fast and Furious sequel--ie, cheap popcorn fare. Style without substance. Mindless, forgettable veg-out material.

Dragonball Z filler is actually pretty good. They're either funny or an interesting story in the universe. That's the only reason I dislike Kai.

Honestly DBZ is just ok. I mean it's classic shonen and it will always be a part of my childhood, but it just doesn't hold up well. There is a ton of filler in it and things really drag at times. It's the kind of anime you put on for mindless entertainment. I still enjoy it, but it is in no way in my top 10. Also since you have seen so little of anime I recommend you go outside the realm of shonen. Some of my favorite anime are Madoka Magica, Baccano, and Cowboy Bebop. Fair warning on Madoka it starts out seeming like a nice innocent typical magical girl show until ep 3 where it gets really dark and just keeps getting darker. Baccano on the other hand is a unique show it takes place in 1930's New York and it tells three stories and switches between them. You have to watch the whole thing for some stuff to make sense, it's like the more you watch the more you can piece things together and see how everything's connected. As for Cowboy Bebop it's a classic and an amazing show it's about space bounty hunters and all the stuff they go through. These that I listed are very different from what you have seen so I hope you consider watching them.

I wouldn't call it good but there is something stupidly compelling about the series, at least until it just starts getting wacky and overpowered. I thought the best arc for it was the planet Namic one with.... uhhh Freza or whatever.

Episodes 7-13 and the first half of 14 are skippable bullshit, but the rest is quite good (assuming that you watch the movie instead of episodes 25 & 26).

That doesn't really help your case much.
